Not the Worst Book of the Year, but getting there. And definitely not in the LitRPG subgenre

Ugg. Certainly not the worst book of the year, but definitely not one I would call good, or even average. Based on the title, and the advertising, and the description, you think this book is part of the subgenre known as LitRPG. It's not. It's two separate stories, one taking place in an MMO, and one taking place in a high school with teenagers, and the two stories are only very tangentially related, in that they have the same main characters. But the things that happen in the real world have no effect on the MMO world, and vice versa. For example, the main female protagonist has had a very difficult emotional event recently happen to her (death of her parents, and her twin sister). This gets brought up in the real world by a bully, and predictably (and rightfully so), the female protagonist has an emotional breakdown. Next time she logs in to the game (which is that same night), she is perfectly fine. Uh, no. Plenty of other things to show that the two plots are only barely tangentially related.

Another hallmark of LitRPG is the stats of the characters and monsters/foes are referred to, and often shown, along with levels gained, etc... None of that is here. None whatsoever.

Also, there are many character plotlines and thread that are just tossed out the window, left unresolved, etc... So much so that you would think that this was the start of a trilogy, but there is nothing to indicate that, other than the unresolved plotlines, and they appear to be unresolved not intentionally, but because the author just kind of forgot about them.

Finally, even if this were actually LitRPG, with the various trademarks and such, the two stories (real world HS and MMO world) are just plain.......boring. Predictable, with very little (almost none) character development, one dimensional characters, and for lack of a better word, boring. The majority of fanfiction is better than this, and if you have ever read any fanfic, you would know how bad I am saying this story is. Like I said, not the worst in the world, but pretty bad.

Ruined by unrealistic mindset of the characters.

I overall enjoyed reading this book, up to a point near the end. It had a hopeful mood with some darkness in the background.

However there was one thing that completely destroyed any sense of realism for me. And that was that when we see the characters in the game, they don't acknowledge that it is a game. Which means that they break down in tears when one of their friend's character dies... What? Why? It's a game.

Not like most mmo. books

A very well written book. good work fom the author.
The book is not like most mmo books i've read in this genre, which i mostly virtual mmo. books. there is not really any transition from th real world to the video game, it's more like a fantasy tale at night following the adventure of the heroes, then during the daytime you'de follow a normal school students life. I did miss some transition to and from the game. I could see the story unfold in this day an age.
I feel like it's a bit too american, story wise, for my kinda taste. A bit too predictable sometimes aswell. But that's just my opinion.

I'd like to give credit to the author, for making a
peorson in the book, a most horrible individual. An individual you'd like to se burning on a stake. i began shaking with anger towards her in the end. you'll see when you read the book.

Five BIG Stars!!!

If you're looking for a book that will keep you interested from cover to cover, never able to put it down, this is the book for you! This is the autobiography of movie star, Frances Farmer, and her demise. It tells of her nightmarish mother (I found myself wanting to hurt her mother more than Frances herself wanted to), her tirades and outlandish temper, her many terrible years in a pit hole of mental institution where she was mistreated and abused and treated like an animal (literally), her struggle with drug and alcohol abuse and her experience with cancer. Whew! All in one book! There were times when I had to divert my eyes (which made it difficult to read) or set it down because I was ready to slap her mother around and my blood pressure was rising.
The most incredible thing about this story is, I believe, that Frances was fair. By that I mean that she told the story as it was and didn't make herself out to be completely blameless or less "violent" than she was. She told about her outbursts and her stupid behavior made from no-thought decisions. She never said, "Poor me," without adding something more justifiable to the pot.
The reading is incredibly easy. Her style (and that of the one who helped her write it) is very smooth and it seems as though everything she has to say is written in an interest-grabbing way.
So, if you want a good, heart-felt, blood stirring read, I HIGHLY recommend this book. It truly is one of the best I've been lucky enough to find. :o)

Engrossing memoir of a tortured, complicated woman

This book is not only my favorite autobiography, but it's also one of my favorite books of any genre. Francis Farmer, the infamous movie star who ended up institutionalized, was a tortured woman. This autobiography, which she wrote shortly before her death, is an extremely well-written, brutally honest, and mostly unflattering self-portrait. She tells of her relationship with her controlling and insane mother (who committed her), her unintentional rise to fame in Hollywood (she wanted to be a theater actress, and found Hollywood mostly empty), her emotional breakdowns, run-ins with the law, drinking problems, loveless marriages, and her time spent in a horrific state mental institution. Despite it all, Francis Farmer doesn't seem to feel a lot of self-pity, and she admirably takes responsibility for much of what happened to her. What really makes the book touching is Francis' description of what ultimately saved her: her friendship with Jean Radcliffe (who published the book after Francis died). Toward the end of her life Francis was able to find a lot of love and happiness, mostly due to the unconditional support she received from Jean and her family. This makes the book not only a juicy tale of a fallen Hollywood star and a disturbing memoir of a mental hospital, but an ultimately inspiring story about the healing power of love and friendship.

Autobiography ignites interest in actress

This book was sold initially as an autobiography by Frances Farmer. Later paperback versions titled it an autobiography "of Frances Farmer" or left out the credit altogether. Book was written by Jeanira Ratcliffe,late author who figured prominently in Farmer's later life in Indianapolis, Indiana. It is this part of the actress' life that is dealt with most definitively in the book. It is here you can find details of the life of Frances Farmer in her last years. I enjoyed the book very much upon publication and return to it often as a story of the strength of the human spirit. The Emily Dickinson poem chosen for the title is especially appropriate and poignant. Although somewhat inaccurate, the book's publication in 1972 ingnited great interest Farmer. This book is a great place to start. Other books of interest include Shadowland by William Arnold and Look Back In Love by Farmer's sister Edith Farmer Elliot (published privately). A great read...but not the whole story.

About the Author
Douglas A. Van Belle is a Senior Lecturer in Media Studies at Victoria University of Wellington. He was the first person to have served as the president of both the Foreign Policy Analysis and the International Communication research sections in the International Studies Association. He has also served as the Editor-in-Chief of International Studies Perspectives and Foreign Policy Analysis and has conducted extensive research on media systems and information flows in international politics. He created the press freedom data set that precedes this study, to examine the effect of media freedom on international conflict, as exemplified by "Press Freedom and the Democratic Peace" (Journal of Peace Research). That initial analysis was expanded to complete Press Freedom and Global Politics (Praeger), which provides the foundation for the extension conducted here. Studies of popular media and political theory led to the undergraduate textbook, A Novel Approach to Politics, which is now in its 4th edition. Also, before returning to the analysis of media freedom with this project, he conducted a series of studies examining the relationship between information flows, disasters, and foreign aid, including Media, Bureaucracies and Foreign Aid (Palgrave: With Potter and Rioux).

Annoying Read

For our political science 101 class we had to obtain this particular book. I would have honestly preferred a typical, stuffy, boring textbook than this. The author was trying way too hard to be funny and the silly examples given throughout the book to explain certain concepts ran a bit too long. On a few homework assignments where I used this book, it got a bit frustrating to read through all those pop-culture/random reference examples just to find a concept I was looking for in a chapter.

I personally did not like the way it was written

I had to get this book for my political science class. I personally did not like the way it was written. A little too "joking" and the author seemed to think he was really funny. I would have rather had a more classic book, but this was the professors request.

3rd edition was better

The seller gets five stars, shipping three, the book two.
Book was bought for me, and I needed it pronto. I have the third edition, and was disappointed when I received the 4th edition because it is identical to the third. The few additional sentences added to the fourth edition bring no substance to the material, just more jokes. The jokes get tiring and add to the course loads required reading. I could do without the jokes and I am sticking with my third edition for POL 111, like I said almost identical but the third edition has less to read.
Shipping was so so. Expedited shipping was used and it came the same day as books I ordered with regular delivery.
The condition was superb, kudos for the seller, disruption far exceeded expectations.
But again, the text lacked the context it advertised.
