About the Author

James W. Nybakken is a professor of biological sciences at the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, a consortium operation of seven of the California State Universities. His research interests are in the feeding ecology of certain groups of predatory marine gastropod molluscs. Dr. Nybakken is a fellow of the California Academy of Sciences and has served as an officer in five scientific societies.

Mark D. Bertness is the chair of the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Brown University, where he has taught for 25 years. His areas of expertise include the ecology and conservation of natural shoreline communities, as well as salt-marsh and rocky-shore ecology and conservation, which he has studied extensively in South America. Dr. Bertness earned his Ph.D. from the University of Maryland in 1979.

All is once again right with the world.

This textbook went out of print several years ago. In the meantime I have tried at least 4 different marine biology texts to support my upper division course in marine biology. None of them adequately food the job of supporting the course the way I like to teach it.

So, now I've gone back to Nybakken's text, supplementing that material with articles and updated info. All is once again right with the world.

Like the way the book is organized, easy to understand if your a biology major. Not written like most general Biology textbooks, boring and stuffy! If your Professor uses this book I think you'll love.

Wonderfully simple and sweet

This is a wonderfully compact introduction to the basic concepts of Artifical Intelligence. You probably aren't going to be able to go and write your own AI after reading this but at least you'll have enough background to read a more detailed text and some of the scientific literature out there. If you've picked up other AI books and felt lost then start here, you won't regret it.

Superficial - for better or worse

Target Reader: If you don't know anything about AI and are looking to understand how the problem space has traditionally be divided this is a good book to start with. After reading this book you'll have a feeling for the major problems and the vocabulary associated with their solutions. If you have any formal AI background you should skip this book.

Anecdotal Description: I would say this book is clearly rooted in the pre AI winter era with a major slant towards strong AI. It is largely silent on the recent big data weak AI machine learning movement. (If that is meaningful to you I'd look at a different book.)

Next Steps / Alternatives: If you accept my premise about the books contents I'd suggest considering three additional or alternative books.
- Introduction to Artificial Intelligence: Second, Enlarged Edition is similar but in much greater depth for those who are primarily interested in the computer science angle to AI.
- Artificial Intelligence: A Philosophical Introduction is also a "kick back and flip pages" style book for those more interested in the philosophical angle on AI.
- For those interested in the cognitive science angle I'm less confident on a recommendation but I've heard good things about The Emotion Machine: Commonsense Thinking, Artificial Intelligence, and the Future of the Human Mind

More Advanced Books:
- Paradigms of Artificial Intelligence Programming: Case Studies in Common Lisp Pure gold for those interested in actually building strong AI and anyone interested in Lisp.
- Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach (3rd Edition) A recently updated classic, deserving of its status as the gold standard but a tedious textbook read.
- Artificial General Intelligence (Cognitive Technologies) (Full disclosure I'm reading this one now so this is an incomplete opinion...) This is really the odd man out and belongs somewhere between these two lists. Unlike Norvig's book and like those on the first list read this book leaning back and flipping the pages. That said it is a good bit more advanced than anything on the top list. It is very current and a great refresh on the fundamentals for those with some background.

Bottom Line: If you are totally new to AI and looking for a quick place to start I'd recommend this book.

A good overview and introduction to the field of AI

This book a a great starting point for studying Artificial Intelligence. For those with a Computer Science background, the book is a quick read that will show how theories such as data structures and search algorithms apply to the different areas of AI. For those without a background in computers, the book will take longer to read and for deeper understanding of some subjects other texts may need to be consulted. However, it is still one of the easiest-to-understand books on AI as most are extemely lengthy and detailed beyond the scope of what most beginners are able to understand.

The book is well written and explains complicated topics in plain English. Figures are used effectively to explain certain concepts. An extremely helpful feature is that every chapter is summarized and further references on that topic are given with a short description of the strength and weaknesses of each reference.

I would definitely recommend this book to those who want to learn about AI. Its a great starting point that can lead you in the right direction if you want to study a particular topic in further detail.

Not a good end to an otherwise delightful series.

This book was undoubtedly not intended to be the last in the series, but unfortunately it was. The book left several very important characters at odds in the end it a disheartening way. If I had to do it over again, I would have stopped the series with The Borrower's Aloft. Other than this story, the rest of the series by Mary Norton was a delightful addition to our family's storytime.

The Final Installment in a Classic Series

Long before there were Littles or anyone shrunk their children, Mary Norton had written this warm and wonderful series about a race of tiny people who live hidden in quiet country houses and "borrow" their livings from the human inhabitants. Their lives depend on remaining unseen and unsuspected.

But little Arietty Clock, who lives with her parents (Pod and Homily) is a naturally curious girl and lonely besides. When, on her very first trip out to Borrow ("The Borrowers," 1952), she is "seen" by a little human boy, she becomes friends with him and sets off a chain of events that will threaten her family's very existence -- and make staying in their home beneath the kitchen floorboards impossible.

In this fifth and last tale of the Borrowers' adventures (written in 1982, decades after the previous four), the Clock family have escaped their captors and moved from the lovely miniature village at Little Fordham to the rectory in the human village of Fordham. Their relatives have taken up residence in the church, and they share the rectory itself with an artistic type of Borrower, Peagreen, who was crippled as a child when he fell off a shelf. But their adventures are not over. The Platters, those terrible humans who imprisoned them in the fourth book in order to make their fortune by displaying them to the public, are back: and just as desperate to find Arietty and her family as ever. In the hair-raising climax, Arietty watches, breathless, as the Platters ransack the church looking for Borrowers. Will she and her friends and relations, Arietty wonders, never be left in peace?

With her "Borrowers" series, Mary Norton accomplished what few writers are able to do: she created a group of characters that become real through her words; and a fantasy world that is so realistic that readers young and old will be lost in it, and will look at their own world differently forever after. Though each stands alone, the five tales read as fluidly as if they are all parts of one larger book -- indeed, the first four have been published as a single volume in the past -- and can be read consecutively without excessive and tiresome rehashing of the previous plots.

If there is any weakness in construction of the series, it is the beginning of "Aloft," when Norton by necessity must describe the competing miniature villages and the contrasts of their human owners. But that is soon overcome, once the Borrowers are re-introduced and the story is underway.

The books are billed by booksellers as written for 8-10 year olds, but they are ideal for reading aloud to younger children; and adults too will enjoy the sheer fun they contain. I first read them when I was ten -- long before "Avenged" was written and answered my longstanding questions about the Borrowers' fate. All five books remain in my reading cycle, to be reread every few years in their entirety. By stages funny, thrilling, and poignant, these lovely books will capture your imagination and keep you turning pages all the way to the end.

The Saga Continues

Just to set everyone straight, this book is NOT based on the campy, sellout movie "The Borrowers." The movie should be renounced by all true fans, as it is a badly done attempt at commercializing on Mary Norton's brilliant ideas. Anyway, "The Borrowers Avenged" was written more than ten years before the Borrowers movie. It continues the story of Pod, Homily, and Arrietty, as they finally settle into an old rectory. It raises important questions about the future--(who will Arrietty marry, Spiller or Peagreen? I tend to think Peagreen.), but as all good Norton stories, gives you room to decide for yourself.
