About the Author
Randall Collins, recognized as one of the world’s leading sociological theorists and comparative-historical sociologists, is Professor of Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania. He has authored a dozen books and well over one hundred articles on all aspects of sociological theory.

Stephen K. Sanderson is currently a visiting professor of sociology at the University of California, Riverside, where he specializes in comparative-historical sociology, sociological theory, and evolutionary sociology. He is the author or editor of ten books in sixteen editions, among them Evolutionism and Its Critics: Deconstructing and Reconstructing an Evolutionary Interpretation of Human Society (Paradigm, 2007) and Revolutions: A Worldwide Introduction to Social and Political Contention (2nd ed., Paradigm, 2010).

Beginning with the Phoney War and Hitler's first visit to the city, acclaimed literary historian and critic Ronald Rosbottom takes us through the German Army's almost unopposed seizure of Paris, its bureaucratic re-organization of that city, with the aid of collaborationist Frenchmen, and the daily adjustments Parisians had to make to this new oppressive presence. Using memoirs, interviews and published eye-witness accounts, Rosbottom expertly weaves a narrative of daily life for both the Occupier and the Occupied. He shows its effects on the Parisian celebrity circles of Pablo Picasso, Simone de Beauvoir, Colette, Jean Cocteau, and Jean-Paul Sartre, and on the ordinary citizens of its twenty arrondissements. But Paris is the protagonist of this story, and Rosbottom provides us with a template for seeing the City of Light as more than a place of pleasure and beauty. (Publisher)

For lovers of Paris

I spent 20 years working in Paris and was unable to obtain the full story of all the problems of everyday folk in an occupied city. This book answers many of my
questions, which French people of my generation (I am in my late 70's) will avert an answer. That apart, it is a fascinating story, very well told.

For example, the 4th Way idea of the Law of Three has been synthesized with the Hindu idea of Satva, Rajasa & Tamasa, the 4th Way idea of consciousness has been synthesized with Vedantic ideas in the Mandukya Upnishad, and the ideas of Patanjali's Yoga Sutra have been synthesized with the 4th Way ideas to unfold more complete and clear picture. This book also deals with the physical and psychological (spiritual) aspects of the structure of both Man and the Universe from the connected & combined (nutshell) view points of physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, astronomy, astrology, ayurveda, psychology, yoga & spirituality. This book also deals with (1) practical Work on oneself (Sadhana), (2) the higher method of learning and (3) the practical relevance of the connectedness of various esoteric ideas and the inter-connection between various Cosmoses in one’s personal Work. Further, in an attempt not to load it with lengthy theory, the ideas have been intentionally presented in simple diagrams and in brief explanatory notes, so that the grasp of the picture of the whole and parts enter directly into that part of us which understands things without words (e.g. when we see the symbol + we understand entire significance of + without words). The 4th Way is a scientific way of spiritual/psychological evolution by (1) observing & understanding within oneself the intellect, emotion, physical impulse, and also the spark of divinity (self-remembering), (2) rightly balancing their workings, (3) learning to apply them all simultaneously in unified manner in day-to-day activities with intentional and enhanced awareness, and thereby eventually transcending inner-slavery, attaining spiritual purity and higher states of consciousness. A Must Read Book

This book presents in simple language and in practical way, how Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Astronomy, Astrology, Ayurveda, Psychology, Yoga & Spirituality are placed holistically, in connected way in physical & spiritual structure of both, Man & the Universe.

The real beauty of book lies in conveying seemingly most difficult ideas in a very simple and yet profoundly effective language. I have never read about the phenomenon of Death explained so simply yet profoundly in a single page. Analogy drawn between material and psychological phenomena has blown my scientific mind!

Chapter on Practical Work provides one the material enough to work upon oneself for life time. If you are a modern time seeker, who need explanation of GOD or spiritual evolution in scientific language then this book is an answer.

The Article on `Higher methods of learning' in the book presents the required direction as to how to proceed, if one intend, in unknown spheres of science, arts, spirituality, or any other area of pursuit.

I enjoyed it very much

I had the chance to read book finally; I enjoyed it very much. Honest opinion, it was very well put together/written. The content was marvelous and brought light to previously misunderstood concepts of the Fourth Way material. I also appreciate very much that it was from a Eastern perspective and explained very well how it is connected to various concepts of Yoga for the mind and spirit.

Highly recommended; it will aid in the understanding of the works of Gurdjieff and Ouspensky.

A strange attempt to squeeze Mister Gurdjeff's teachings and Hinduism together. Ultimately a failure

I think Mister Vaishnav has gone way off the track trying to collate Mister Gurdjeff's Teachings with the concepts of Hindu philosophy – although Mister Gurdjeff seems to borrow the great deal from the Samkhya, the oldest Indian philosophy, these diagrams just don't make it for me. I would rather do the work than be a baby bird eating half pre-digested food. For that reason I cannot recommend this book.
