About the Author

Gail E. Tompkins is Professor Emerita at California State University, Fresno. Dr. Tompkins, degreed with a language arts focus, was inducted into the California Reading Association’s Reading Hall of Fame in recognition of her accomplishments in the field of reading. She received the prestigious Provost’s award for Excellence in Teaching at California State University, Fresno. Dr. Tompkins is the author of six other books published by Pearson Education: Teaching Writing: Balancing Process and Product, 50 Literacy Strategies (a balance of language arts and literacy strategies), and Literacy in the 21st Century: A Balanced Approach including two grade-specific versions of this text: Literacy in the Early Grades: A Successful Start for PreK-4 Readers and Writers and Literacy in the Middle Grades: Teaching Reading and Writing to Fourth Through Eighth Graders. During the past three decades, Dr. Tompkins has also worked with kindergarten through college-level writing teachers at National Writing Project sites in California and Oklahoma.

Very usefull !

The book was really useful as we've hiked the island this summer. There were just few moments when the description of the route wasn't quite correct, but it didn't lead to any dramatic consequences - you just use your common sense to find the way. The book is small and very light, has just the necessary comments and some pictures for inspiration. After this one I've purchased few more guides from Rother and I am really looking forward to using those during my new walks.

Was it obliterated by a carpet bombing inflicted by the German Condor Legion as the Basques insist or torched by the Basques themselves who allegedly sought to throw the blame upon their Spanish Nationalist opponents? Although the destruction of Guernica occurred 78 years ago the incident still resonates throughout the Basque country. For Basques, Guernica is the wound in the heart that still separates them from their fellow countrymen who control Spain’s fortunes from Madrid. But for those who know little or nothing about the event, it is Pablo Picasso’s masterpiece they think of when Guernica is mentioned. His austere, black and grey painting has become the celebrated indictment of modern warfare, especially the bombing of civilian centers. As such, a copy of the painting guards the entrance to the United Nation’s Security Council chamber. Guernica was the first European town thoroughly leveled by incendiary and high explosive bombs which pointed the way to the frightful bombings of Warsaw, Rotterdam, Coventry, Hamburg, Dresden, Tokyo, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki during World War II. Guernica reminds us of the devastating potential of modern air power, which like Damocles’ sword still hangs ominously over a troubled and anxious world.

Winston Carter received his MA in History from the University of California at Berkeley and studied Spanish civilization at the universities of Madrid and Valencia. Subsequently, he taught History part time at Santa Rosa and Chabot community colleges in California and Western Washington University. He spent most of his academic career teaching Government and World and U.S. History with the Department of Defense’s overseas schools in Vicenza, Italy and Nürnberg and Frankfurt, Germany.

An inviting balance of past, present and future Daoism

Kohn supplies the basic textbook on Daoism, with summary points and discussion questions for each section. She walks through the history of evolving sects and practices, always with an insightful, matter-of-fact voice. The book has a good balance of past, present, and future. It covers modern developments such as new Qigong sects, trendy Daoist retreat centers for upscale clients, Daoist influence in the West, and recent trends in Daoist studies. The book puts the reader in touch with organizations, resources, and individuals who are shaping or exploring this huge tradition.

One of the best introductions out there

Kohn has crafted an amazing introduction to Daoism in this book. She details everything you need to know to get started understanding this tradition, tracing its history chronologically through the various different schools, focusing on their practices and beliefs. She details the creation of the Daozang, or the Daoist "canon", as well as its division, something lacking in other texts. Furthermore, she discusses the influence of Buddhism on the religion as well, and touches on the parts of Daoism that come from traditional Chinese correlative cosmology, such as yin and yang, as well as the five phases.

What sets Kohn's book apart, however, is the plethora of further reading she gives. At the end of every chapter, there are at least five more books specifically dedicated to the topics covered in that chapter. This gives the interested reader more resources to delve deeper into the religion. She also has a chapter on the state of Daoist studies, which lists a history of the topic and gives some more recent influential books the reader might be interested in.
