Top notch zombie series

There are a ton of zombie novels on the market, many of which are of unimaginative and/or predictable. The Arisen series is a smart, clever, fast-paced thrill ride that takes the reader inside an elite military team that may be mankind's last, best hope to finding a vaccine against the zombie virus. Despite their specialized skill set, the members of this team are also clearly depicted as flawed human beings who are more than one-dimensional killing machines. You get to know them as people who are dealing with all the same doubts and fears as the rest of the remaining living humans except they've made the choice to sacrifice their personal issues to dive headlong into the fray so mankind may have hope. Truly riveting. If you enjoy the zombie genre but are tired of one dimensional stories and characters, give this series a try. You won't be disappointed.

Team Alpha rocks

I like a good zombie romp and this book has action in spades. As another reviewer commented, the zombie fighting is a bit slower in the second half of the story but it serves as a nice setup to the following book. The "Suicide Squad" flavor of their frantic early missions make up for any lag in my opinion, and the authors take the time to develop the characters more than is usually seen, with the exception of Ali. I hope we find out more about her story in the second book, since she is one of my favorite characters despite her air of mystery.

Amazingly well-written action thriller

This is an astonishingly well-researched and highly plausible novel about a viral infection causing a global "Zombie Apocalypse". The writing is quite good and engaging - full of action scenes that had me frantically reaching out for the "Next Page" button on my Kindle. The level of realism in this novel is what really sets it apart - the authors just seem to get everything right down to the finest details. I can't wait for the next installment!

What seemed like 90% of the book was an elaboration of what ...

There is real reason to doubt this book but after reading it, it is undoubtedly worth a full and thorough read. Yes, as may be expected with any book about how to think it is full of information that is obvious and abstract. However, its biggest flaw if any is that much of its small and airy volume is full of reiterations of the same information and concepts. What seemed like 90% of the book was an elaboration of what had been summed up in a few sentences in the first chapter and therefore seemed fairly obvious. That being said, I’m glad for that because even after reading the entire book I had significant difficulty implementing the six thinking hats method in a discussion. Even though the entire book is based around a relatively simple concept, it’s an incredible concept and it’s a concept that’s incredibly difficult to fully understand after reading just the first chapter. Additionally, that 10% each chapter that wasn’t a reiteration of previous concepts like the purpose of a certain hat, was information that was very insightful and very useful.
Like any skill worth learning, the six thinking hats method needs not only to be read about but also to be practiced to be most useful. Really meaningful things can come out of reading this book but only if you do more than just read it. The book includes short examples of how each hat should be used on almost every page. However, apart from a few pages near the beginning of the book and mention under the blue hat section, there are no simple and precise guidelines on how to tackle an entire conversation using this method. De Bono’s explanation for this is that there are no simple and precise guidelines for how to use this method because the best method is the one that is developed on an individual basis. When attempting to put this in practice however, I found this to be very difficult. In practice I wasn’t sure when to use what hat or whether I was really using the hat I thought I was. Despite this, I’m confident that with a little more practice I will have adopted a method of thinking that really is superior to the one I had before reading The Six Thinking Hats. The difficulty in implementing the six thinking hats method in itself goes lengths to show that it is a meaningful method that is worth reading a book about. There is no doubt that De Bono is one of the greatest minds of our time and that even if you consider yourself an organized and intelligent thinker, reading The Six Thinking Hats will give you a more powerful and effective mind.

If you want to find a way to make smart decisions without taking too much time

If you want to find a way to make smart decisions without taking too much time, then this book is for you. “Six Thinking Hats” is written by Edward De Bono. He makes a comparison between critical and lateral thinking. As children, we are taught to do critical thinking. We have a problem, we find a solution, and then we spend time arguing why our solution is correct. This method of thinking creates arguments and that is what De Bono tries to eliminate. He came up with the concept of the six thinking hats in order to help people think better. With the six thinking hats, people are able to solve problems without causing arguments. Each hat is represented with different colors and each one has their own meaning. The book is, in a way, divided by the different hats. At the beginning of each section, he explains what the hat represents and he gives examples of how the hat is or can be used. At the end of the “section”, De Bono gives a good summary of the hat. This makes it easy for the reader to clear up misunderstandings that they may have had in the beginning. Also, the concept of the six thinking hats is explained well. Having different colors for each hat is easy to remember what each hat represents and the concept is easy to understand. It may take some time for people to get used to using the six thinking hats but once they get used to the method, their life will become easier. People are able to come up with solutions faster using this method compared to using critical thinking. Using the Six Thinking Hats may also provide better solutions to problems because they will go over different alternatives and the best one will be the final solution to be chosen. This method of thinking allows everyone to participate and they all see each others perspectives on an issue so it is easier to decrease arguments. De Bono explains that there are two purposes for the Six Thinking Hats. The first purpose is to simplify thinking. Focusing on one part of the problem at a time becomes less overwhelming for people. The second purpose is to allow a switch in thinking. Every person has the opportunity to switch their hats so they can see the different sides of their problem. This book can help a business or a group of people improve their communication, increase their creativity, and make better decisions. Overall, this is a book worth buying. The book is easy to read and it is also very educational.

Improving the way we think

If you look at the human history, everything that is manmade comes from the way we think and communicate. We all have our own unique perspectives on how we view the world and many times, there are conflicts because we tend put our egos first before anything else. "Six Thinking Hats" by Edward De Bono can teach you how to put your egos aside and help you utilize his six thinking hats. This strategy will help you in many situations, especially when you are working as a group or organization because it is about efficient communication and effective decision-making. There are six different colored hats and each hat serves a purpose and reasoning. Let us say that you are in a meeting with a group of people with a same goal. Assuming that everyone had a different strategy of achieving that goal, there can be some conflicts due to their ideas. This is where the six thinking hats come in to play. The White Hat can be used when you define what information can be obtained and what is needed. The Green Hat represents creative thinking and sharing those unique ideas with each other. This is where the Yellow Hat and the Black Hat comes in handy. The Yellow Hat shows the positives and optimisms of each idea that is presented and the Black Hat lists all the negatives and skepticisms about the same ideas. After going through the pros and cons, you ask you group about how they feel about each idea by wearing the Red Hat, in which, represents feelings and emotions. To finalize the meeting with one strategy that is in the best interest of the whole group, you wear the Blue Hat, where you come to a decision after going through the process. I highly recommend that you read this book because using these thinking hats will benefit you in your personal and professional lives in terms of communication and decision-making.

Great reference, but could be improved

I do think that this book is showing its age a bit (see below), but it is still a good introduction to this world. One drawback to this book is the inclusion of so many actual problems from the archive. The fact that they are actual problems prevents the author from providing a solution, which would be very helpful.

I do realize that this book is meant to be used as a course text, so including solutions for all problems is not ideal, but having one or two non-UVA problems that could be dissected would be great.

Now as to how the book shows its age, I think the complete omission of unit testing is a real detriment to the book - in all cases, problem statements include sample input and output. Adding tests up front to ensure that at least the sample cases are always passed really helps to keep things on track when coming up with a solution to a problem.

Don't get me wrong - these are minor things that do not take away from the content of the book. This book (and/or a course based on it) should be required for all CS undergrads!

Excellent book - several caveats

First, let me get the caveats out of the way:

1) 'Contest' code like this does not teach nor encourage many of the concepts desirable for large system development. The point is not to have code that is extensible, maintainable, well designed, etc... although there are some good points (see below).

2) This book does not try to 'teach' concepts. That is not the point either (see below).

While the book is not 'teaching', it does set a bunch of interesting playing fields in which people can explore, discover, and learn on their own. In this regard, this book is excellent. I am considering using it to lead a study group at work for this reason.

While it is not promoting the development of many of the desirable skills I think develops generally need more of, it is promoting the use of requirements, detailed design, and acceptance tests... this is how the projects are specified and graded.

Yes, I said graded. This is a really cool feature of the book - there is a website where your solutions can be submitted, and a 'robot' will run and test them, letting you know the results. The way they pull that off is pretty cool. You create an account, and it ranks how well you are doing.

If you are interesting in contest coding, if you are looking for some platform on which to lead a study group on algorithms/problem solving, or if you are the kind of person who picks up Games Magazine looking for little problems to solve, this book is for you.

As a teacher, this book fails me.

I teach computer science at the high school level. Many of my students are hired for professional software development before they even graduate. One of the areas my students tell me they wish they could do better is contest coding. I've been doing quite a lot of research in that area, and I've read and digested several very good algorithms books (Data Structures and Algorithms in Java by Peter Drake is among the best I've read so far). Unfortunately, I have yet to find a book that adequately explains how to generate rapid solutions to contest problems. A skill that is interestingly useful in the professional environment in the role of prototyping.

WHAT I THINK ABOUT THIS BOOK:
The book falls very short of what it promises. It does contain a few selected programming problems (several of which I encountered when I competed in the ACM contests myself!), but it merely gives hints on things to think about and nothing about how to select appropriate solution algorithms. Also example code is only given for the simplest of situations. I would have preferred examples of more complex scenarios with a discussion of how to scale it back for simpler situations. Also, the book purports to be language neutral, and in their defense, although all the code is in C, there are discussions of how to use libraries from other languages. The only real use I got out of it was how to categorize problems into subsets and what those subsets look like. Essentially, the book is written to an audience who likely doesn't need the book in the first place...which is a shame.

If you are a master programmer and you just need some "nudges" in the right direction, this will be an excellent book for you.

If you are a novice, this book is all levels of wrong for you...consider getting a good data structures book (that includes graph algorithms...many of them don't!).

If you are an average to good programmer, just go to one of the contest sites and practice problems. It might also be useful to download the FREE guide to the ACM International Contests at acmsolver dot org. Also, the problems presented in this book are mostly covered in the collection of problems published as "From Baylor to Baylor".

About the Author

Raymond Scupin is professor of anthropology at Lindenwood University. He received his B.A. degree in history and Asian studies, with a minor in anthropology, from the University of California-Los Angeles. He completed his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in anthropology at the University of California-Santa Barbara. Dr. Scupin is truly a four-field anthropologist. During graduate school, Dr. Scupin did archaeological and ethnohistorical research on Native American Indians in the Santa Barbara region. He did extensive ethnographic fieldwork in Thailand, with a focus on understanding the ethnic and religious movements among the Muslim minority. In addition, he taught linguistics and conducted linguistic research while based at a Thai university.

Dr. Scupin has been teaching undergraduate courses in anthropology for almost thirty years at a variety of academic institutions, including community colleges, research universities, and a four-year liberal arts university. Thus, he has taught a very broad spectrum of undergraduate students. Through his teaching experience, Dr. Scupin was prompted to write this textbook, which would allow a wide range of undergraduate students to understand the holistic and global perspectives of the four-field approach in anthropology.

Dr. Scupin has published many essays based on his ethnographic research in Thailand. He recently returned to Thailand and other countries of Southeast Asia to update his ethnographic data. He is a member of many professional associations, including the American Anthropological Association, the Asian Studies Association, and the Council of Thai Studies.
