About the Author

Neil Carlson, U Mass Amherst -- Professor Emeritus at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Neil Carlson's research has focused on the relationship between the brain and behavior—specifically, the role of the limbic system in learning and species-typical behavior. Dr. Carlson received his undergraduate degree and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. In addition to writing Foundations of Behavioral Neuroscience, Dr. Carlson is also the author of Physiology of Behavior and co-author of Psychology: The Science of Behavior. Dr. Carlson's books have been translated into Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, German, Hebrew, Japanese, Chinese, and Korean.

Carlson has terrific Neurosicence text

I've used Carlson's Neuroscience books for years and find this to be an excellent up to date Behavioral Neuroscience foundation with clear interesting chapters. Love the use of clinical cases at the beginning and end of chapter to pique reader's interest as in a mystery novel. It has terrific image quality and great links to media in MyPsychkit companion. I commend the author on keeping the book manageable for a one semester course in light of this rapidly expanding technical field.

DONT ORDER FROM AMAZON!

If you need the book edition that comes with "mypsychkit" do not order from here, its very misleading and says its "(MyPsychKit Series)", but DOES NOT include any access to mypsychkit online. I ordered this book assuming it was the right edition I needed because of the title and did not find out until class started, that I had to pay an extra $35 for access! Your best bet is to buy the package from the Pearson website, its the same price and a lot LESS HASSLE! Whoever typed the title is clearly a moron, because this is definitely NOT the same edition! Conveniently there's no way to contact amazon unless I want a refund, and now its too late to wait on the real book to be shipped!

UPDATE: I feel the need to update this as I have had two review nazis leaving negative comments, when I purchased and left this review it was in 2010...since then they have obviously changed the description of the text (so it no longer says it includes "mypsych kit" anymore, as it did when I ordered it and the description was wrong) Amazon thankfully refunded me $35 of my purchase to cover the costs of having to buy "mypsych kit" from the Pearson website since they were in fact at fault. It was my first experience buying from amazon and unfortunately was a very negative one, I have since bought hundreds of things from amazon with no problem. The amazon associate was very helpful and understanding of my frustration at the time and informed me that they were in fact wrong and would work on changing the description to make it accurate. Unfortunately this was not done and completely resolved until after I had left my review, it was posted not to down amazon/the publisher/the book etc...as others have suggested (I actually suggested ordering it straight form Pearson) but was posted to save any future students/customers from going through the hassle that I had to...with that being said, all is well and seems to be correct now and having been an a loyal amazon customer since, I would definitely recommend buying from them.

As far as the book actually goes, its neuroscience, so its not exactly cake as workload is concerned, but the text /layout of the book was very well done. It reminded me of a biology book you'd have in high school (pertaining to layout and ease of reading only). I could easily find exactly what I was looking for in the book when I needed it and the text was broken down in a way that made the complex content easily understandable! Would recommend this book! I only wish my class had been organized in the same manner! haha

Not as thorough as I would have liked

This textbook covered a lot of material, but was not as thorough as I would have liked for the course it was used for. I found it to stop short on many points and seemed to just skim the surface when it should have gone much deeper to give a clearer picture. If I had to choose to a textbook I think I would search a little further than this publication for my students.

I feel this book is rather juvenile. The plot was implausible. It was hard to connect with the characters.
The language was a bit confusing since it was written by (I assume) an English author. There were also a lot of typos.
Maybe a reader younger than I would enjoy it more, although the language was rather coarse.

FOR THOSE WHO THINK THAT BETTY WAS LYING.......

I would advise you all to read her follow-up book to "Not WIthout My Daughter" called "For the Love of a Child". Betty WAS NOT LYING in any part of her book. She has proof of all her experiences and the way she escaped, namely, her stamped passport in Ankara, Turkey. Her ex-husband Moody, recently published his own side of the story is his book "Lost WIthout My Daughter" where he says Betty lied about everything, but he offers no concrete proof of this. Betty has her bus tickets, passport stamps and valid witnesses to the proof of her escape from Moody's wicked claws. More proof? Mahtob, her daughter, who is now an adult has repeatedly refused to acknowledge her father because her trust was betrayed as a child. Surely, as a grown woman, Mahtob is able to make her own decisions and her decisions stand as proof of what both she and her mother went through to get away from this madman (who has lied repeatedly). Also, this book (and the movie) was not meant as an affront to the Iranian culture. Quite the contrary, Betty goes out of her way in the book to relate the fact that it was the kind and compassionate Iranians who helped her escape from Moody's clutches. She received NO HELP from the U.S. state departments. People should remember that this is an honest depiction from HER standpoint and what SHE WENT through. She is only speaking for herself and no one else. As for Moody, well, he is obviously a bitter old man now. Perhaps he does feel loss and anguish for Mahtob, but he did bring the situation upon himself. If Mahtob refuses to have anything to do with him, it is her decision and who can blame her? It is time for people to realize that Betty's book was factual and not exaggerated in any way.

**AN EXCELLENT BOOK**

NOT WITHOUT MY DAUGHTER is one of the very best books that I have ever read. My only regret is that I can't give this book more than 5 stars. Betty Mahmoody is very courageous for telling her story.

This is a story about an American housewife who goes to Iran with her husband and daughter. Her husband decides to keep her in his homeland against her will. She is a virtual prisoner at the mercy of her corrupt husband. Her basic human rights were violated, rights that any ordinary person takes for granted. She finally finds help to get back home but the journey isn't easy.

This book gives a really positive message which is that there is good in people all around the world. There were many Iranians who were willing to help her no matter what the consequences were.

I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in equality and human rights. Also, on the same topic I recommend any books by Jean Sasson.

it boils down to one thing

I loved this book. I have read through it a bunch of times and I always find it just as compelling. In a later review, I will get into that one more. In the meantime, I want to comment on the criticisms I see over and over. You accuse her of being biased. Let's consider some facts. Betty Mahmoody went to Iran with her daughter. That is a fact. Her husband would not let her leave. That is a fact. She was held against her will. Yes, I know she could have theoretically forced a divorce which would have gotten her deported but her daughter would have been stuck there. She was not allowed to leave freely and on her own terms simply because she was a woman. That is a fact that is written into the country's law. Criticize her if you feel you must. But just remember that she was held against her will just beacause of her gender. There is no justification for that. Please, tell me. What defense could her husband possibly have?

Instead of calling this book "The Essential Buffett", Hagstrom should have called it "The Rehashed Buffett". I have read both of the author's previous books about Buffett, and they stand well on their own. This book, though, is just a cash grab. It is "essentially" just highlights from the other two books recycled into this "new" book.
If you haven't read the first two books should you read this one? I don't know... but if you have read the first two, don't bother with this patch job.

Misleading Premise for the Book Reduces Its Value

The definitive book on Warren Buffett has yet to be written. Perhaps only Mr. Buffett can do so, and he has no incentive in this direction. Interestingly, the more Mr. Buffett's performance weakens versus the market, the more books come out focusing on his methods. Mr. Buffett writes about his thinking in his annual reports of Berkshire Hathaway, speaks about it at his annual meetings, and occasionally shares ideas with reporters. Conclusions about his methods then are a distillation of these sources, much like the CIA used to interpret what the Soviet's thought by reviewing Pravda. The results are probably about as accurate. My main complaint about this book is that Mr. Buffett does not and probably will not invest in the new economy. And for good reasons. It doesn't fit his investing standards. So a book that takes the principles and applies them in that direction is misleading at best, and I suggest you decide what you want to call it at worst.
If you want to read a good book about Mr. Buffett, I suggest that you read How to Think Like Benjamin Grapham and Invest Like Warren Buffett. That volume covers much of the same ground as here, but does so better. It also is more accurate in characterizing Mr. Buffett's philosophy, as I understand it. You can read my review of that book.
If you have read Mr. Hagstrom's book, The Warren Buffett Way, you probably don't need to read this one as well. Let me summarize some of the key points so you can decide. Here are the principles in the book, as I have paraphrased them:
(1) Think about a stock investment like you are buying the whole business.
(2) Give yourself a large margin of safety when you buy, picking a time when a stock is depressed well below its economic value.
(3) Hold few stocks and think about their current and future fundamentals constantly to see if your assumptions are holding.
(4) Avoid speculation at all costs.
The tenets of The Warren Buffett Way are repeated here:
Business Tenets
(a) "Is the business simple and understandable?"
(b) "Does the business have a consistent operating history?"
(c) "Does the business have favorable long-term prospects?"
Management Tenets
(a) "Is the management rational?"
(b) "Is management candid with shareholders?"
(c) "Does management resist the institutional imperative?"
Financial Tenets
(a) "Focus on return on equity, not earnings per share."
(b) "Calculate owner earnings." This is essentially free cash flow.
(c) "Look for companies with high profit margins."
The reported reason Mr. Buffett does not buy technology stocks is because he feels the long-term prospects are too murky. He is probably right in most circumstances. Technology companies are usually about as successful as their new products. How can you know how good they will be versus the competition 10 years from now?
The fundamental premise of a book like this is also questionable in another way. If you want to get Warren Buffett's results, you can simply own Berkshire Hathaway stock while Mr. Buffett is alive.
For most people, indexed mutual funds are a better choice. I suggest that you read John Bogle's Common Sense on Mutual Funds to learn the argument for that approach. If 90 percent of the pros cannot beat the market, can you expect to do better?
After you read this book, also think about where modeling of a famous person's behavior might not capture what you want to learn. For example, can an actor distill her or his approach into a few principles and tenets? Yes, but that distillation wouldn't allow you to duplicate the results.
Take your money seriously, and keep focusing on how to keep it safe as your first investment priority. Avoiding losses is a key Buffett principle that has served him and his investors well.

If your going to invest learn from the best

Before I read the Essential Buffet I knew very little about Warren Buffett. I knew he was one of, if not the richest man in the world. I knew he made his fortune from the stock market, but that was basically all.
I began the book with the hope of learning what set him apart from the thousands of other investors that don't even come close to his successes.
The book begins with a general summery of what is to come. Then it gets into the details. You learn how his childhood shaped his decision making. Then it talks about his greatest influences Graham and Fischer. Then it talks about how he selects stocks.
All of the skills you learn not only teach you why he was successful but also how you can be. The author uses simple analagies to explain complex ideas, which makes it an easier read.
I recomend the book to those who are interested in the stock market, owning or managing a business or just in economics in general.

Haunting

This moved me to tears. Well one lone tear actually, like the kind you see in movies that dramatically comes out of one eye. I loved the story. It's a PG rated story, and I couldn't help but wish it was hotter, even though there is plenty of romantic tension between Max and Alexis. It packed in quite a bit in what seemed to be not too many pages. I felt as if I started it and finished it in a blink of an eye, which is always the sign of a great book!

Great Romance

The synapses had me from the start. Alexis had me from the start with her Mission Impossible style entrance into the story. And Max, in the first discussion with his mum, I was like 'awwwwww, love him'! By chapter 2, we know what conflict is going to eventuate, which leads to utter rediculousness, but I kept turning those pages because I was already in love with the characters, and also with author Loretta Hill's writing style. Strictly PG story here, but I still really enjoyed the romance. Would love to read more books from Loretta, when the prices become reasonable.

Lost, scared and feeling alone, these authors had the courage to come forth and tell their story. Seeking help is crucial if you are a woman who is prone to depression. If you plan to have children or are pregnant and suffer bouts of emotional turmoil, anxiety or depression, you MUST read this book. We all suffer at different levels because motherhood is hard. Kudos to the courageous women who came forth and told the brutal truth as they risked being judged as a potentially 'bad mothers.' We must hear these stories to help other mommies who are suffering. Alternating omniscience and the first-person musings of Chen, Lam uses the stories to plumb the four's good, bad, and ugly characteristics. Ming, the only woman, and Fitz try to sublimate and end up sabotaging their love for one another as they study for exams; Ming moves on. Sri becomes so personally attached to patients that at one point he begins to wonder whether it is he or a paranoid patient who is the true psychotic. Although Chen makes a Herculean effort to maintain tight control over his own humanity, he, too, struggles to keep private concerns separate from concomitant professional life-and-death decisions. Captivating and insightful short story collection

Kurt Vonnegut once wrote that he had trouble ending short stories in ways that would satisfy a general public. The dilema of how to end a short story and not leave the reader feeling unfulfilled is an enourmous challenge for any writer. Admittedly, I felt unfulfilled by some of the stories in Vincent Lam's Bloodletting and Miraculous Cures, but for the most part I found this collection facinating and highly entertaining.

Lam draws on his own experience as an emergency room physician and provides an insider's view into the challenges of medical school and the demands of being a physician. Lam introduces the reader to four young medical students and follows them through twelve loosely woven stories. Readers expecting Bloodletting to resemble a novel, where each story is linked to the last may be disappointed. The first three stories follow this format, but while each story does feature at least one of the four young doctors, there is little connection between the remaining 9 stories.

Like all short story collections, some are better than others. The strongest stories (`Eli', `Night Flight', and `Before Light') are the ones that explore how ethically complicated being a physician can be. Lam's writing is fresh, insightful, and often touched with humor. I particularly enjoyed the movie scenes that Fritz imagines, while longing for his former girlfriend in `How to Get in Medical School Part II', and the highly entertaining story of Chen's grandfather in a `Very Long Migration' (which sounds like it may be the basis for Lam's first novel).

While a little uneven at times, overall Bloodletting and Miraculous Cures is a captivating, insightful look at the complicated, challenging, and emotionally draining world of medicine. I look forward to Lam's debut novel.

No Other Book Like It

I first heard of this book when I read about it winning Canada's top literary prize--I thought it unusual that a full-time doctor could write such acclaimed fiction, so I asked a Toronto friend to send me a copy and I'm glad this is now out in the States. The stories are beautiful, intelligent, and often darkly humorous in a way that reminded me of Nathan Englander, Jhumpa Lahiri, David Schickler, and Adam Haslett. But what sets this apart is how it takes you deep into the world of doctors--how they feel and think in relation to each other and their patients. It follows four young doctors during medical school and then into their early careers. There's romance, crazy patients, tense ER moments, mundane patient/doctor conversations that take on a deeper meaning. Really just everything a doctor might encounter, seen through their eyes. This lingered with me much longer than any episode of ER, HOUSE, or Grey's Anatomy ever did--definitely worth a look!

"You should respect a man's symbols"

The practice of medicine offers endless scope for a writer--the chaos of sudden illness, the smoke and mirrors of technology, and the blend of empathy and toughness in the characters of those who succeed in this challenging field. Canadian author Vincent Lam's credentials as an emergency physician give Bloodletting & Miraculous Cures the ring of truth, though it's a work of fiction; I was halfway throught the book before realizing that it's not a novel but a collection of short stories, closely linked by the cast of four main characters and by the chronological arrangement.

We meet Ming and Fitz during their college years in Toronto. Ming's family expects only the best from her, and her demands on herself are even greater. She will never allow her love affair with Fitz to interfere with getting into medical school. In the second story, Chen and Sri join Ming in the dissection lab where they bond with (and argue over) their cadaver. These four young people are showcased throughout the book.

Though the stories are linked, they vary in mood. The rigors of medical school and residency feature in the early stories. "A Long Migration" is a vignette of Chen's Chinese family. Several stories feature patients and their troubles. In "Night Flight," Fitz flies with a medical evac team. Possibly the best of the bunch is "Contact Tracing," a strobe-like string of impressions from the Toronto SARS epidemic; in this year of H1N1 fears, it had an ominous reality.

Some of the stories were very satisfying to me, but overall the book seemed a bit uneven. It feels like a book that would have been a novel if the author had taken the time to integrate it more fully; a book that SHOULD have been a novel. Ming and Fitz are vividly drawn at the beginning of the book, and though the characters do change and grow, I felt that I knew them less well at the end of the book.than at the beginning. The situations took center stage, rather than the characters. This might have worked better with a more independent set of short stories.

This debut book won Canada's Giller Prize in 2006. I wavered between three and four stars, deciding on four because when it's good it's very good. I'm looking forward to more from Vincent Lam.
