Great resource for adults

We have used Accurate English as a textbook in our pronunication and intonation classes at our university because it is a great technical resource for students who are trying to improve their pronunciation and simultaneously want to learn something about how sounds are produced. The book's approach is to help non-native speakers learn about and experiment with the principles of articulatory phonetics (the way the sounds of language are produced by the mouth, tongue and vocal tract). It explains many of the terms used in linguistics and speech pathology in a way that anyone can understand, and encourages students to become more aware of the ways that they produce speech sounds. This approach can be very very helpful, even with students whose non-native speech habits have become deeply entrenched.
The book covers all the essential components of a course in pronunciation: consonants, vowels, rhythm, stress, and intonation. It has lots of exercises to help students learn the sounds of American English and they way they are produced. It also has some of the best information I have seen on learning how the sounds of English correspond with orthography (spelling). It is a perfect book for one-on-one tutoring in accent reduction or pronunciation. If you are using it as a classroom text, it tends to be a little dry, but it does contain a lot of exercises. They just aren't as context-based as some of the others out there. It wouldn't be hard to supplement the exercises in this book to keep students interested, however. It can also be a resource for teachers to use to supplement an advanced class with meatier material.
If you are a student, you will need to find a native speaker to help you with some of the exercises and provide feedback. If you buy the tapes, you'll be able to listen to the exercises, but you'll still need to get someone to listen to you and help adjust your pronunciation. This is true for all pronunciation books, by the way; it's not unique to this book.

Not for the Amateur

This is a terrific book for students of: linguistics, accent improvement (with a cerebral view) and speech modification coaches/teachers who are interested in the nitty gritty linguistic explanations of what goes on with pronunciation and intonation. I believe for most anyone who wants to teach pronunciation and intonation with excellence in mind, this book is a must for your reference library. I have used this book in accent achievement coaching in the educational setting,and I found it was too top-heavy with metalinguistics and had to supplement with functional self-made worksheets for students.

Accurate English is a professionally engaging text

This text is what Language Consultants who work in the area of accent reduction have been looking for. Aimed at adults, it contains both a diagnostic speech sample and a helpful "self analysis section". The use of the IPA is clearly and carefully done. The chapter divisions make it easy to move around in the text and focus on what an individual speaker needs. In addition, the audio tape has up-to-date dialogues with natural speech and idioms. Finally, the index and the accompanying teacher's manual make this a text not to be missed.

Imagine a new system of finding people with whom you could be compatible, or who at least understand the nature of your interpersonal dynamic. Based on information channeled from her spirit guide Grey Eagle, spiritual medium Altea (The Eagle and the Rose) has written such a system based on "Soul Signs" or energy groups: Fire, Earth, Air, Water and Sulphur. Although the first four sound similar to the cardinal associations of astrology, Altea firmly asserts that astrological and soul sign typing are different. For example, her mother is an Aquarian, but fire is her soul type. Fire souls are driven by passion; earth by a need to plan and strategize; air by a passive and calming energy flow; and water by a need to evaluate and compromise. The fifth group, sulphur, is a total departure from astrological ideas, as sulphur souls are driven by evil. Within each of the five energy groups there are subsets based on type of energy flow (introvert, central and extrovert), which is not the same as a personality type whom we might consider as introverted or extroverted. These subsets have evocative labels such as Retrospective, Visionary, Peacemaker, Newborn, Bright Star, Warrior Soul, etc. All members of the sulphur sign are considered Dark Souls. Since soul signs, unlike astrological signs, lack an obvious date marker, Altea gives numerous explanations and variations to help readers determine their soul sign and subset throughout. The book's chief merit is in provoking new ways of contemplating the human psyche.

Another "must have" book. One you will lend others but not give away. Good reference materials on your energy and soul signs. Better then horoscopes, and will surprise you and help you realize the differences and why the actions and beliefs of your family and friends differ so much from your own. Once you know why, it makes you closer to them and much more compassionate and helpful. You rid yourself of the mental & emotional baggage you have been carrying around for years. Once you read one of her books, you become like me, hooked on reading everything she has published. She is a 5 star read for sure.

A great book for anyone wishing to know more obout bulldog breeds, it also expells some of the myths surrounding fighting dog breeds. this book does not promote the fighting of dogs, but does explain the history of the barbarrick so called sport.

Excellent review of the world's most powerful dogs

Whether or not this book is new or old to the dog world in general, it wasn't new to me. I hadn't heard of several of the dogs contained herein, and it was very interesting to see what they look like and read about their history and gameness.

I learned quite a bit about gameness, and the inappropriately labeled "sport" of dogfighting, although this book DOES NOT (nor do I) support or promote dogfighting. I also learned that Dr. Semencic really likes the American Pit Bull Terrier - as it is the gamest of all breeds.

For someone who didn't know very much about the so-called fighting dogs going in, this was an excellent introduction. The information was accessible, and pictures contained within were helpful in getting a good feel for each dog that was discussed.

Parisian Perfection

This is an amazing book, it is HUGE. The photographs are of the first quality and are crisp. This book is 700 pages so you can imagine how thorough it is, it just goes on and on, page after page, one building more amazing than than the other. I have always loved Paris and the city photographs so well, much like Rome. This book is a steal at this price and that is saying something, I am surprised they can print it at this price and make money, the paper used is of the highest quality and that's what makes the pictures pop. The book goes inside buildings that are rarely photographed, that's why it is such a joy to find that the photographer is excellent and that the quality of the book is fantastic. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves Paris and appreciates books of this quality.

There he is recruited to judge a contest between the traditional Aeschylus and the modern Euripides, a contest that yields both sparkling comedy and insight on ancient literary taste. In Assemblywomen Athenian women plot to save Athens from male misgovernance. They transfer power to themselves and institute a new social order in which all inequalities based on wealth, age, and beauty are eliminated—with raucously comical results. The gentle humor and straightforward morality of Wealth made it the most popular of Aristophanes' plays from classical times to the Renaissance. Here the god Wealth is cured of his blindness; his newfound ability to distinguish good people from bad brings playfully portrayed social consequences.

Each play features a general introduction containing a plot summary and discussion of major themes, a note on the text, and a list of major annotated editions...In just over four years Henderson has edited and translated the four volumes of the new Loeb edition of Aristophanes. Every volume is well edited, succinctly annotated, and so translated as to engage the reader in the humor and seriousness of the comedies. An excellent translation of Aristophanes' finest works

This book, the fourth in Dr. Henderson's fine series of parallel translations, is perhaps the best of the series, containing as it does the comic masterpiece "Frogs," in my opinion the finest of Aristophanes' works. Henderson's translations are crisp, clear, and hilarious, and his extensive use of vulgarity is always textually and philologically sound (as a few comparisons of Liddell-Scott and the OED will surely reveal). In short, it is the definitive edition of Aristophanes' works, and the only translation accurate enough to be worth having on your bookshelf (and believe me, I've read quite a few).

This salty 'Frogs' has got legs

I had to read 'Frogs' for school, all the translations I'd found were awful, then I stumbled upon Mr. Henderson's translation and hit the jackpot. No Dryasdust prissiness here, the language is earthy and accessible, and the scholarly footnotes are also very well done.

Outstanding book

Yes, Aristophanes was a genius in using satire to sting the then politicians. Oh! How we could we use his abilities today in the US!
I highly recommend this (and other similar) books to anyone who likes or loves to read excellent books with morals.
With this book I now have all of Aristophanes's plays to read over and over to my grandchildren, who love them. Thank you.
