From School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up—Kaelyn is on the run again—this time not only from the devastating virus, but from a group of survivors called The Wardens who are determined to steal the vaccine. How much is Kaelyn willing to sacrifice in order to survive?

From Booklist
The conclusion to the Fallen World trilogy serves as an extension to the second volume, The Lives We Lost (2013), with Kaelyn and her ragtag gang on the run from the Wardens, as they cross a disease-ravaged America on their way to the CDC in Atlanta, where a woman claims to be able to reproduce the cure sample that Kaelyn is carrying. The impediments are what you would expect—sickness, injury, death, and sacrifice—but Crewe gives the book a late shot in the arm (so to speak) by offering up surprisingly complicated and nuanced portrayals of both the Wardens and CDC members. They, like everyone else in Crewe’s grim dystopia, are neither good nor evil. Just fighting to survive. Grades 9-12. --Daniel Kraus

Review
4Q 4P S The "friendly flu" has mutated into a deadly variation. Kaelyn Weber's dad was lucky enough to generate a vaccine for the virus, but he did not survive long enough to get it out to the general public. Kaelyn, only a teenager, and her group of friends set out from Canada on a trip to carry the life-saving vaccine to the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta. It is a treacherous journey. A ruthless gang called the Wardens is hunting the group down, fuel for automobiles is scarce, and infected people can be found anywhere, including members of Kaelyn's group. Adding to the hardship, there are only three samples of the precious vaccine, which must be kept cold in an environment with no electricity. Kaelyn must push herself to the physical and moral limits if she wants to save humanity, but it could mean losing herself. In the final installment of The Fallen World trilogy, Crewe paints a picture of a desolate world ravaged by a deadly virus. The breakdown of government and common courtesy is represented well, while Crewe still sows a seed of hope for the future. The character of Kaelyn carries the book-she is well developed, with a lot of depth and emotion. Readers will feel her struggles as she pushes past her moral boundaries in an effort to benefit humanity. They will also feel her loss and triumph. This well-written character is the heart of this solidly written selection.-Dawn Talbott. VOYA"

In the World We Made
By OpheliasOwn
When the world officially falls apart thanks to a virus that originated on an island and couldn't be quarantined. Despite everyone's best efforts for a cure, the only tried and true vaccine was developed on the same island where the virus originated. Now a group of kids are the last hope to get it to the CDC in order to save what's left of their world.

Kaelyn never imagined she would hold the hope of saving the world in her hands. Then again, she never imagined she would watch the people she loved get sick, go mad, and die, either. When her dad died, she assumed the responsibility to get the cure to a place where it could be mass-produced and distributed, but the journey is far from easy. While Kaelyn and her friend Leo are vaccinated, no one else in the group is safe from the virus, including her boyfriend. Without an immunity, Kae's group finds itself with two infected members. Knowing how the virus plays out, they don't think they will ever make it all the way to the CDC in Atlanta.

It doesn't help that there is a gang of malicious, greedy thugs on their tail, either. The Wardens, sent by Michael, their leader, are determined to get the vaccine. Michael has created a group who aren't afraid to profit from the apocalypse, and if they get the vaccine, it will only get to the highest bidders. The group knows their mission is a life or death journey, but the true magnitude of how many lives they hold in their hands with the vaccine is almost too much for a group of teenagers to handle. The only thing that keeps them going is a duty to everything they have lost in this whirlwind apocalypse.

When it comes to the apocalypse, we all know it is going to get ugly, but how ugly should we make it in a young adult novel? Authors like Mike Mullin, Michael Grant, and Lex Thomas show the dirty, ugly side of things with all its grit and grime and don't hide anything from the audience. Then there are authors who can tell the story without getting too graphic, like Mindy McGinnis or Emmy Laybourne. It isn't that they are hiding the grit, they just have a knack for tip toeing around the big, bad and ugly. Everything is behind the black curtain or the "fade to black" where the other authors lay it all out, clear as day. Neither approach is bad, they are just very different, but the thing I like about having both options is that I can get different types and ages of kids to read the same kind of stories while still finding one that is developmentally appropriate for my student. For this series, I have to say Crewe decided to keep the ugly side of humanity behind the curtain and leave it up to the reader's imagination.

For this reason, I really like this story for those younger students who may have liked the dystopias out in the genre right now but aren't really mature enough to handle the graphic side of post-apocalyptic stories. I could give this to a middle school student and they would see one layer, or an older student and they would see a deeper layer. I don't have to worry about situations being too mature or too graphic for a younger student. The story itself was really interesting and would hold the attention of any reader, and Kaelyn is a determined, strong young woman to read about. I was impressed with this trilogy and look forward to more from Crewe!

Fantastic conclusion to the trilogy, full of bold choices in the story arc, character development, and emotion
By Kelli Nash
I've been a fan of Megan Crewe's Fallen World series for years now, and I've been dying for book three to be released. This book was outstanding, and the perfect end to the Fallen World series!

The premise of the Fallen World series is really unique and captivating. The concept of the friendly flu is terrifyingly realistic. To think of a virus decimating the world the way the friendly flu has in Kaelyn's world is just horrifying. Kaelyn's dad was a researcher and he created a vaccine for the virus before he died. Kaelyn has made it her mission to get the vaccine to the CDC in Atlanta, in the hopes that the CDC can make more of it and stop the spread of the virus.

Much of The Worlds We Make was devoted to Kaelyn and her friends' journey to Atlanta. They encounter many obstacles along the way, obstacles that would make most people turn around and go home, but Kaelyn is not most people. She is determined to make it to Atlanta and to make what's left of the world a better, safer place to live.

I loved so many things about The Worlds We Make. The imagery was beautiful, and the book was full of small details that made it special. Kaelyn encounters a wolf in the wild at one point and that was one of the most beautiful and poignant scenes of the book. Leo's encounter with a black bear, and how he and the rest of the group interacted with the people in that town was a defining moment of the story. That one scene set the tone for how Kaelyn hoped the world would end up: people helping people in need, for no reason other than it being the honest, good, and right thing to do.

Crewe makes bold choices in her story arc: namely, in keeping the book realistic with deaths of important characters. I never want main characters to die, yet, the story would have felt inauthentic and less powerful if everyone had lived, and gone on to live happily ever after. I respect authors who create endings that are appropriate to the rawness and emotional level of the series, and not just your typical HEA.

Kaelyn made so many important decisions throughout this story, but her decision about who to give the vaccine to was the most vital one and the one that surprised me the most. I was so happy with how that story arc ended, and especially glad that Crewe used that part of the story to effect change with two main groups of characters.

The Fallen World series embodies everything I love about dystopian fiction: a great premise, a thrilling plot, a love story, and a perfect conclusion. I highly recommend this series!

wonderful storytelling!
By pontmarie
All I can say is that I am glad that I tried "one more" book by Lisa Kleypas. I tried 2 and didn't really like them, but after Where Dreams Begin, I am glad I persevered.
Lady Holly Taylor is a proper lady of her time, and a widow who truly mourns the loss of her husband, George. This in itself was great, since usually we have the widow who has never loved before, but Holly has, and when her heart is once again, awakened, this time to Zachary Bronson, she is shocked and saddened that she could betray George like that.
Zachary, meanwhile, can't forget the lady he mistakenly kissed in a darkened room and works it out so that Holly and her daughter Rose come to live with him, so they can teach him and his nouveau rich family proper manners and protocol.
As Holly struggles to maintain her distance from Zachary, she realizes that she is losing social standing by her close and scandalous association with this upstart who was once a fighter. Nevertheless, as she begins to fall in love with him and with his mother and sister, society doesn't matter to her anymore.
This was such a richly drawn book that I am looking forward to reading what I am told are Kleypas's even better books - Then Came You and Dreaming of You - Holly and Zachary are two truly well drawn characters who make the reader care for them. Rose is neither a brat nor a "precious" child, and Zachary's humble mother, unused to her new luxurious life, is really heartwarming. a secondary romance is written well enough to interest, but not overshadow the main romance.
I loved this book and recommend it wholeheartedly.

Who wants a gentleman anyway???
By Julianne
Lady Holland Taylor couldn't have found a man more different from her late husband, George. Zachary Bronson is definitely not a gentleman. Especially, by the ton's standards. Oh, far from it. And when Lady Holly finds herself wanting change, after three years mourning for her late husband, she decided to take Mr. Bronson's offer to turn him into a gentleman. (Of course, this is after that delicious episode in the balcony at the Bellemont ball...) However, Zachary Bronson is a common man, who rose out of the squalor and poverty using his sheer brute strength (and intelligence). And now, he is one of London's most affluent businessmen... and a bit feared, as well. He has just about everything but the respect that comes with blue-blood aristocracy. As Lady Holly tries to teach him manners acceptable with the London elite, this hardened man tries to win the beautiful widow's heart. No doubt, sparks fly from both directions and the reader will surely looser their heart...like this reviewer has. Zachary Bronson does clean up rather well.
In the processes of getting a good lesson on peerage titles and other appropriate manners for the aristocracy, I ended up enjoying this book thoroughly. Little Rose was utterly charming and her button string is too cute!! Elizabeth and Jason's secondary love story was brief but delightful. And Vardon, Lord Blake of Ravenhill is the next hero in the making! I've never felt such strong sexual chemistry between two characters and it was so rewarding when they finally gave into each other. I loved reading this book and I highly recommend it to any romance reader looking for an absorbing story. Seriously, it has a great ending. And needless to say, Zachary Bronson is a hero worth reading about.

Wonderful, Sensual, Captivating Story
By A Customer
This is the type of book that gives one the "warm fuzzies". Zach and Holly were made for each other. What was so wonderful was the fact that they genuinely liked each other as well as loved each other. No "I hate you" stuff which leaves me cold. Zach and Holly are about as mismatched as a couple could be; yet, they fall in love and like each other.
Holly is a true lady and a widow and is hired by Zach to teach his sister, mother and himself "social graces". He makes her an offer she can't refuse and she moves herself and her daughter, Rose, in his home. Unbeknownst to Holly, Zach is the man who kissed her at a party, in error. The room was dark so they could not see each other; however, Zach follows her out of the room and discovers who she is.
There is a small minor problem keeping Holly from marrying Zach but that is soon resolved.
Lovely story by Ms. Kleypas, as usual.

Miss Color Theory class, again? That’s OK. You can borrow our notes.

Lucky for you, we didn’t miss a single class the entire semester so you’ll find all of the important points explained in the notes, along with the class assignments.

Sorry if you can’t read the handwriting sometimes, but there was a lot to cover. We went over all of the basics–how light works, ROYGBIV, RGB, CMYK, color wheels, how to choose colors and compose with colors, all of that stuff.

If it helps, we tried to include a lot of drawings because that’s how we remember things best.

Oh hey, to learn more, just go to the class website at www.design-fundamentals.com  or check out the “Notes on Color” pinner on Pinterest. The instructor put extra projects and exercises on the site, a bunch of cool links, recommended reading, that sort of thing.

Good luck! See you in Visual Elements and Principles of Composition class next semester.

Spectral Evidence: The Photography of Trauma, by Ulrich Baer

In this remarkable contribution to photographic criticism and psychoanalytic literature, Ulrich Baer traces the hitherto overlooked connection between the experience of trauma and the photographic image. Instead of treating trauma as a photographic "theme," Baer examines the striking parallel between those moments arrested mechanically by photography and those arrested experientially by the traumatized psyche -- moments that bypass normal cognition and memory. Taking as points of departure Charcot's images of hysteria and Freud's suggestion that the unconscious is structured like a camera, Baer shows how the invention of photography and the emergence of the modern category of "trauma" intersect. Drawing on recent work in the field of trauma studies, he shows how experiences that are inherently split between their occurrence and their remembrance might register in and as photographic images. In light of contemporary discussions of recovered memories and the limits of representing such catastrophes as the Holocaust, Baer examines photographs of artistic, medical, and historical subjects from the perspective of witnessing rather than merely viewing. He shows how historicist approaches to photography paradoxically overlook precisely those cataclysmic experiences that define our age. The photograph's apparent immunity to time is seen as a call for a future response--a response that is prompted by the ghostly afterlife of every photograph's subject. In a moving discussion of a rare collection of color slides taken by a Nazi official in the Lodz ghetto, Baer makes us aware that it is the viewer's responsibility to account for the spectral evidence embedded in every image.

From Library Journal
Applying psychoanalytical theory to photo criticism, Baer (German, NYU) makes comparisons between the notion of the photograph's "arrested moment" and how the human psyche processes trauma. He draws from Freud, Barthes, Benjamin, and Charcot, as well as recent studies in trauma, to prove that images representing a traumatic history lack the concept of "future" and forward movement that characterizes conventional documentary photographs. Traumatic memory, like the camera, freezes the moment and removes it from the forward motion of linear time. Instead of sensational images, as the title might suggest, Baer uses seemingly commonplace photographs to illustrate his ideas, thus placing the viewer in the role of witness instead of innocent onlooker. Ultimately, Baer is able to support his premise by establishing the connection between the concept of trauma and the development of the photograph, making this research original as well as timely. Baer is the editor of No One Bears Witness for the Witness: The Culture of Memory and Historical Responsibility after the Shoah and the forthcoming 110 Stories: New York Writes After September 11. The current volume contains an extensive bibliography and notes and is recommended for graduate and research collections. Shauna Frischkorn, Millersville Univ. Lib., PA

Review

"Whether he's discussing the relationship between AIDS-activist video and Charles Ludlam's aesthetic of the ridiculous, applying Walter Benjamin's concept of messianic time to the experience of living with AIDS, or exploring the ethical position of film as witness, Gregg Bordowitz is at once passionately committed to socially engaged, theoretically informed art and searchingly honest about its difficulties. Representing a unique voice that refuses to separate the personal and the political, this is an indispensable collection for anyone interested in contemporary debates about cultural politics."--Rosalyn Deutsche, Barnard College, author of *Evictions: Art and Spatial Politics*Please note: "Ludlam" was misspelled in previous version.

"Baer seeks to usurp our common understanding of the photograph with a richly informed and persuasive discourse." Robert Pepperell Leonardo

"Genuinely interesting, original, and well-written. The book's arguments will be especially relevant to scholars of the still-developing field of photo-history and criticism."--Geoffrey Batchen, Professor of Art History, City University of New York Graduate Center

"This book introduces photography into the rapidly expanding arena of interdisciplinary debates about collective trauma, memory, and representation. Arguing that photography and traumatic events have a common structure, Baer pleads with great sensitivity for an ethical way of seeing--witnessing--that both respects and responds to the unknowable reality of trauma. A welcome contribution to an urgent discussion."--Rosalyn Deutsche, Barnard College, author of *Evictions: Art and Spatial Politics*

"Georges Didi-Huberman's *Invention of Hysteria* is an almost legendary text, so influential has it been on cultural criticism, and this even before its very welcome translation into English. Written in a style that is at once literary and philosophical, Didi-Huberman brilliantly demonstrates how a study of hysteria in the nineteenth century continues to have profound relevance for anyone interested in questions of culture and its embodiment -- that is, questions concerning the workings of power. The author's erudite combination of visual and textual research and provocative analysis has produced a book that will be equally crucial to scholars of medicine, feminism, psychoanalysis, literature, photography, art history, the body, or postmodern theory, to name only a few of the fields it touches on. But it's also simply a great read, an artful rendition of history that reminds us of the extent to which the 'weird science' of the nineteenth century still haunts our thinking to this day."--Geoffrey Batchen, Professor of Art History, City University of New York Graduate CenterPlease note: Endorser gives permission to excerpt from quote.

weak argumentation but nonetheless interesting
By sm
This book is suggestive rather than having a strong argument. The structure is a little eccentric: photographs of hysteria are analysed in one chapter, while the rest of the book considers photographs about the holocaust. There's little engagement with other books on the topic of holocaust imagery such as the work of Didi-Huberman, Lisa Saltzman and Barbie Zelizer. On the other hand, the book does raises some interesting issues about hysteria and the camera and examines some interesting photographic projects about the Holocaust. On the whole, the writer does not handle images well, although the discussion of landscape is quite nuanced. My feeling is the book needed another draft and deeper thinking, nonetheless it is provocative and well worth reading.

Spectral Evidence: The Photography of Trauma
By Susan J. Harris
Photography has completely changed the way in which we see the world. This book calls into question the validity of this reality.
As a photographer, I have often wondered if this is a good or bad thing.

Introduction to Voltammetric Analysis: Theory and Practice, by Francis G. Thomas, Gunter Henze

Voltammetric methods are among the most sensitive and versatile available to the analytical chemist. They can identify and quantify substances from simple metal ions, through to complex organic molecules. The concentration range spans 9 orders of magnitude and, in many cases, trace level analyses of surface waters and body fluids can be performed with little or no pre-treatment of the sample is required.

In this text the basic concepts and principles are presented in an easy-to-read manner. Practical aspects are discussed and an overview of the electrochemistry of the elements and of organic functional groups is interspersed with 27 tested applications described in detail.

The techniques covered expand its application out into other disciplines apart from chemistry, such as botany, zoology and soil science.
