**Description** This is the fifth edition of an excellent book on the clinical interpretation of laboratory results and how to apply these results to individual patients.
**Purpose** Written for pharmacists, the book discusses commonly used laboratory tests for each major organ system and how they are used to correctly screen, diagnose, treat, and monitor response to treatment.
**Audience** It is written by and intended for pharmacists. Although pharmacy practitioners may benefit from this book, pharmacy students will find this an excellent guide when used as a companion to pharmacotherapeutic textbooks. The authors all participate in medication therapy management as well as the interpretation of various laboratory results to help optimize patient care.
**Features** The chapters are well organized and divided into three sections, covering concepts such as interpretation of drug concentrations, body systems, and special populations. Each chapter begins with objectives that are discussed throughout. Brief sections describe how laboratory tests relate to normal physiological processes or the pathophysiology of the disease. Patient cases as well as learning points also are provided to reinforce the information discussed. Readers of the previous edition will find some notable changes. The template for the Quickview tablets at the end of the chapter has been simplified for easier interpretation. Abbreviations throughout the book have been consolidated into one list in the beginning, making it easier to find their explanations. Finally, the normal ranges have been standardized to resemble those used in Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine, which helps to reduce variations encountered between this book and others.
**Assessment**
This popular book is an excellent companion to books on therapeutics. Although
it doesn't go into detail on assay methodology or medication-related causes of
abnormal laboratory data, this is a superb source of information on how
laboratory tests are used for diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring response to
treatment. The patient cases and the highlighted key points that appear
throughout are well written and help reinforce the important concepts.

About the Author

Mary Lee, Pharm.D, BCPS, FCCP, is Vice President, Chief Academic Officer for Pharmacy and Health Sciences Education, Midwestern University, and Professor of Pharmacy Practice, Chicago College of Pharmacy.  Dr. Lee graduated with BS in Pharmacy and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science in 1976 and 1979, respectively, and completed a residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in 1977.  She joined the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy in 1979, where she served as Director of the Drug Information Center and then clinical pharmacist to the urological surgery service at the hospital.  In 1985, she was promoted to Associate Professor and from 1985-1990, she served as Assistant Dean of Student Affairs.  In 1994, she became Associate Dean of Midwestern University Chicago College of Pharmacy; and in 1998, she was appointed Dean.   She served as Dean of the College from 1998 through 2006. 

Dr. Lee has published over 100 research manuscripts, book chapters, review articles, and short reports in peer-reviewed publications.  She has served as an elected officer on the American College of Clinical Pharmacy Board of Regents, chair of the Clinical Section, American Pharmaceutical Association, Academy of Pharmaceutical Research and Science, and as chair or member of numerous committees of APhA, ACCP, and state pharmacy associations.  She is considered an expert on pharmacological issues in urological diseases, has earned board certification in pharmacotherapy, has won numerous teaching awards, and received the 2010 Illinois Council of Health System Pharmacists Pharmacist of the Year Award.

Great Textbook - Avoid the Workbook

This textbook is very well written, easy to understand and well organized. The format is very well laid out with important concepts in separate text boxes throughout the chapters which makes locating key concepts a breeze. The accompanying workbook, however, is not recommended.

About the Author

RICHARD A. DEFUSCO, CFA, is a Professor of Finance at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He earned his CFA charter in 1999 and started CFA grading in 2000.

DENNIS W. MCLEAVEY, CFA, is Faculty Advisor to the Ram Fund and Professor Emeritus of Finance and OR/MS at the University of Rhode Island. He obtained his CFA charter in 1990 and began CFA grading in 1995.

JERALD E. PINTO, PHD, CFA, has been at CFA Institute since 2002 as Visiting Scholar, Vice President, and now Director, Curriculum Projects in the Credentialing Division for the CFA and CIPM Programs.

DAVID E. RUNKLE, CFA, is Director of Quantitative Research for Trilogy Global Advisors, LP. He joined Trilogy in 2007 from Piper Jaffray, where he was an Investment Research Manager.

About the Author

 

John Carl's interest in sociology grew from his interests and job experiences after college, which included working in hospitals, schools, churches and prisons. John reflects, “In these many diverse encounters I continued to notice how often the structures of society often did not support the change so desperately sought after by the individual.  I began to reflect on my sociology courses from my undergraduate work and decided to return to graduate school to study sociology.”

 

Returning to graduate school at the University of Oklahoma, he became passionate about the study of Criminology and Stratification completing his Ph.D. while teaching full time at Rose State College.  John says, “I found that every part of my life to this point, fit perfectly with the study of sociology.  It is a diverse and exciting field that helps a person understand their world.”

 

Today, teaching remains his primary focus. John Carl has excelled in the classroom, winning awards for his teaching and working to build and improve the sociology program at Rose State.  “I teach the introductory class every semester because I believe it is the most important course in any department.  It is where students get the foundation they need for their continued study of sociology.  In these classes, my goal is simple.  To teach students to think sociologically so that they can consider any new event in the light of that thought.” 

 

John lives in Oklahoma with his family, wife Keven, and daughters Sara and Caroline.  In his free time, John plays golf, gardens, throws pottery, and plays his guitar.  He continues to move from the classroom to community by being active in non-profit leadership in his home community and providing training to non-profit boards so they may better achieve their goals.  John suggests, “It is all part of sociology, not only to understand the world in which we live, but to take that understanding from the classroom and use it to improve the community.”

This text is a very easy read, but covers concepts extremely well. I rented it for my Social Problems class and ended up enjoying it because of its amount of relative information useful outside class. If you like learning about societal issues, you'll enjoy this text!

I ordered this book along with Social Psychology (7th edition). Both were in perfect condition and were ready to read. Although one was a softcover it was in just as good condition as the hardcover copy.
