LIKE BEING RIGHT IN THE HOLY LAND

The book "Pastures of Wonder" makes one feel like if he or she were right there going to Jerusalem and then later in the book to travel down the road to Jericho with the excitement of maybe even encountering robbers on the way as the man in the story of the Good Samaritan.did. The added information that this area close to the Dead Sea was also where Jesus went for forty days to fast and pray reveals the keen talent the author had to make the travelogue historically informative and interesting especially for scholars. The author amazingly gathers every bit of information about each site he visits showing the importance a`place has in the bible as`well as in history.

Quite Inspiring

I purchased this book decades ago from a book seller. It is a first edition and in excellent condition. I read the book and was swept away by the descriptive prowess of Van Dyke; clearly written when words spoke for pictures. I have since returned to the book for doses of inspiration and relaxation. Then I noticed I'd creased one of the pages! I was delighted to find the book on Kindle and immediately downloaded it. Now inspiration rests in my phone or tablet or laptop!
Van Dyke does an excellent job of bringing the reader back to the Holy Land. A more contemporary author did a similar thing decades later; the original is far better! You don't have to be religious to enjoy the book.

About the Author
Werner Sollors is Henry B. and Anne M. Cabot Professor of English Literature and African American Studies at Harvard University. He previously taught at Columbia University, the Free University of Berlin, and the Università degli Studi di Venezia. Teachers beware--poorly proofread edition!

This review is neither of Equiano's text itself, nor of the editorial material (both are excellent for teaching). When I ordered this text for my class, I was dismayed to discover numerous proofreading errors which generated some confusion among students. These tend not to be mispellings, but much worse: substitutions of one word for another, or omissions of important words, as though the whole text had only been run through a spell-checker. Some of these are embarrassing (Equiano's report of "the mortifying circumference of not daring to eat with the free-born children" [33-34]) and others more serious (the omitted word in the crucial sentence "I own offer here the history of neither a saint, a hero, nor a tyrant" in the first paragraph). There is probably one major error for every page of this text. I don't think this has to do with fidelity to the London first edition of 1789, although I haven't checked. The errors seem to have been introduced at Norton. So, sadly, despite Werner Sollors's excellent introduction and the useful maps prefacing the text, I can't recommend this book until Norton gets its act together. Use the texts in either Henry Louis Gates's "Pioneers of the Black Atlantic" or Vincent Carretta's "Unchained Voices" instead--the notes to the latter make it the teaching edition of choice.

A true disaster!

Arrrgggrrh! I am going to teach this text tomorrow and now looked again wistfully at some of the errors I had seen earlier and had forgiven. I saw a "new" one now that I simply cannot forgive! In making a crucial distinction between slavery in his homeland and slavery in the West Indies, Equiano said in the original and all other versions: "...they do no more work than other members of the community." In Sollors's Norton Critical Edition, that becomes "...they do more work than other members of the community," a complete opposite that radically inverts the meaning. This is truly horrible. It didn't make sense in context, thank heavens, so an attentive person would immediately be suspicious.

Interesting indeed, an amazing account of an unusual life

"The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudiah Equiano, or Gustavus Vassa, The African, written by Himself" is the story of an African man, Olaudiah Equiano (slave name: Gustavus Vassa) who was (evidently) born in 1745 in what is now Nigeria. He was captured by African slave traders, taken to the Atlantic coast, and sold into the slave trade. He was taken to the Caribbean, then Virginia, and eventually Europe. He served a ship's captain and sailed the Mediterranean and on a voyage to explore the North Pole (Greenland). He obtained his freedom and became an author and early anti-slavery activist. The publication of this book made him the best-selling black African author ever (up to that time). This book became a prototype of the "up-from-slavery" autobiography (typified by Frederick Douglass) and is a classic among Atlantic slave narratives.
The book is autobiographical and arranged chronologically, the author detailing events of his African childhood and his years as a slave and eventual self-emancipation. One notable thing about the book is the extent to which it is a travelogue: Equiano clearly enjoys telling travel tales more than decrying the horrors of slavery. His depictions of being a "stranger in a strange land" (e.g., the first time he encounters a clock, a painted portrait, books) are memorable.
The Norton edition is filled with related texts pertaining to Equiano and his times: articles and excerts by other writers about Africa, slavery, abolition, Equiano's birthplace, his literary influences; a useful map; a diagram of a sailing ship, etc. A good choice among several editions of Equiano's book.

A fantastic start to a new YA fantasy series!!

I really, really loved this book. It’s so exciting when you get to start a new series and even more exciting when you fly right through the book and love it! I would definitely recommend this book to fans of Snow Like Ashes by Sara Raasch, The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson, and Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas. It almost felt like a mash-up of those three books with a little bit of Batman mixed in there. That might sound weird, but it worked. Believe me.

There is a lot going on in this book. At first I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to keep it all straight and I’d get lost along the way, but it actually worked really well together. Once I got the hang of the alliances and kingdoms and the wraith, everything else just fell into place and it all flowed really well together. Sometimes when there are so many elements happening at once, something just doesn’t fit in, but it all fit together nicely, especially the further on in the book I got. Pieces just kept falling into place and I loved that.

One of my favorite things about this book was the characters. I really love Wilhelmina. She started off knowing she was the princess of a fallen kingdom and wanting to do nothing but get her kingdom back. She was a fighter and a protector but not really a leader. She spent so much time thinking about those who were close to her and protecting them that she hadn’t really spent the time thinking about what winning her kingdom back would really mean and what the best way to do that was. When she had the time to think about it, everything changed. I loved to see her go through that and, in a sense, really grow up and become a leader of her people. And even though she changed and grew up throughout the book, I liked her both in the beginning and at the end. I also like that we know who she is from the very beginning. There’s no big reveal about how she’s the lost princess or anything. We just know.

The supporting characters in this book were so good, too! They were so well developed and interesting and had me questioning what I thought was going to happen. They didn’t always turn out like I thought they would or do the things I wanted them to. They kept me on my toes and turning the pages and I loved that! There is some secret identity things going on and some romances and while I didn’t necessarily like every character in the book (which we aren’t suppose to do), I loved the roles they all played. I can’t wait to learn more about them in the next book and see if some of my predictions are right about where they might be going and planning!

Which leads right into the next thing I need to talk about. This book has one of the biggest, meanest cliffhangers ever. And I’m not exaggerating. At least, I don’t think I am. Maybe there are some out there that I haven’t read yet. But this one is seriously bad. I definitely had one of those moments turning the page back and forth wondering if maybe my ARC had been missing a page or two. And maybe it was. I’m still holding out a little hope that when my finished copy shows up, there will be a couple of more pages in the end of it. It’s definitely what I’ll be looking at first thing I get my hands on it! I don’t want to keep hammering on the same thing, I just want to prepare all of you for the pain that comes at the end of the book. It’s so good, but most definitely painful. In some sick way, I kind of loved it. But mostly I just want to know what happens right after the book ends! I NEED TO KNOW!! If anyone has any kind of information about this, please share it with me!

Okay, enough with that. I feel that I’ve warned you plenty about the pain this book can cause. And I certainly don’t want you to be turned off by that. It’s definitely worth the pain. This book was seriously good and very addicting. If you’ve read all of the Throne of Glass books and need a new series to start, I highly recommend this one. It’s full of action, political intrigue, princes and princesses, runaways, secret identities, spies, magic, a little bit of romance, and a kick-ass heroine!! I loved it! Now go read it!

The Orphan Queen is a story following Wilhelmina and while she has multiple identities at the moment through and through she is a princess of a kingdom taken over by the Indigo Kingdom ten years before in the One Day War. She and many others were left orphans and taken into the Indigo Kingdom but as they escape they took on the title of Ospreys and learn stealth and theft anything to survive and take back her thrown. To do so she will work as a spy and infiltrate Skyvale Palace and gather information on their foes. However, taking her throne back isn't that simple, on top of dealing with those difficulties there is a much larger issue at stake, the Wraith, toxic by-product of magic making magic illegal for years, is working it's way across the continent laying waste to the land. Even if she manages to get her crown back she will still have to contend with this threat.

Let us start with Wil, she is different than what I have come to expect from characters reclaiming their thrown. She may be the rightful queen but her and the Ospreys have a different leader of their group, Patrick. His father was the former General and he was the oldest when they escaped making him the best choice to get them where they needed to be. Wil is a skilled fighter, they all are after years of surviving, which makes her pretty bad ass. We also learn from the start she herself has magic, a flasher, but thankfully no one knows or she could be killed. With magic being illegal and the cause of the Wraith it's a touchy subject. She's a master forger and loves the art of writing and drawing and I enjoyed the way it played out. As a future queen of her people she also sees a larger picture and while she lets others lead she does not blindly follow but questions and looks for her own answers.

In Skyvale one figure in particular hunts down flashers and those who hurt the city, Black Knife. Black Knife is a very complex character. He is one to be feared but as we continue we come to see more of him and just what he does. He is a vigilante but he also is doing so to save the people of the city which is commendable. I think I liked this character the best as I got to know him and even as I suspected who Black Knife was beneath the mask early on it was fun to watch it play out. I don't think the identity is meant to be shocking, I think there is enough out there to make the reader suspect and in turn enhance the character without fully confirming until the final section.

The characters and their interactions were what really moved things along for me. I was invested in them, Patrick and his rule of the Ospreys and did I trust him or not, her best friend Melanie and did I suspect her, the other ladies of court while under cover and their motives. Clearly I distrust everyone it seems. We also can't forget some of our men, Prince Tobias and his cousin / guard James and of course our masked Black Knife all of whom have their moments both good and bad. All of them formed a web that makes you want more. And if that isn't enough you really get to dive into the whole world of Skyvale and the Wraith. Trying to figure out what it is and how to stop it and the beasts it creates keeps you guessing. What is rumor, myth, and what might actually help. All while giving us hints of the past with connections and magic itself. Along with pieces of what Wil herself can do as she struggles with what she thought she knew of the past and what is becoming clear may be well and true.

Overall it really took off and after the first 70 or so pages where I enjoyed it I moved to hard to put down. I am so glad I waited to read this book though because with the ending that I had now I don't have to wait to read what happens next and how the story ends. I will be starting The Mirror King today and I will share thoughts once I finish.

This was an excellent book. The characters are well developed, and the protagonist is a strong female role model, who is not dependent on her male love interest. I would highly recommend this book for young adults grades 6 and above. The language is rigorous without causing frustration. There is no adult graphic content.

FRAUD Five Star Reviews All Apear Fake

This book appears to be a fraud attempting to get money from the huge market of parents who want to coach youth soccer.
All the four and five star reviews appear to be fake in order to try to fool customers into buying it. If you read the reviews you'll find that they are as shallow as the content of the book. I got fooled. I'm gave it a chance but the more I read the madder I got. Interesting that 18 of the reviews were written on July 13 by free kindle orders. In the book the author is pushes all players to getting a professional coach...from the book "Parents should take the time to get their kids a professional coach for their kids training"...and then says "Parents are now waking up to the reality of having a professionally trained coach for there children." Huh I thought this book was intended to teach parents on how to coach there kids to be better players and have fun. This is filled with a bunch of stuff that makes no sense and nothing to do with tips techniques and secrets to coach your child. Take a look at the preview pages. The book has no useful information in it, there are no drills, no photos, no diaphragms, no explanations. It is a clear fraud and the author is using Amazons reviews to provide false feedback. I love Amazon and frequently rely on the reviews to make a informed purchase. It is sad that people are able to manipulate the review system that many of us rely on. I'm returning mine. Don't take my word for it. Check out the reviews (they give no details), check out the preview pages and write an honest review so that these people are exposed.

My humble opinion

Without trying to be too animated I will say that this is the best book of the last few years for me. It is timely and challenging- not a casual read, by any means. My wife and I have read it in our coffee time for the past few months and have grown immensely in our spiritual perspective. We are reading this series out of order, so we'll try volume 1 next, but "oh, what a find."

Best Digested Slowly

If we could truly grasp the depth of Graham Cooke's excellent book we would be a people changed from the inside out living in a world that changes around us because it cannot help but give way under the magnitude of God in us. The book may have a provocative title that appeals to the charismatic but in all honesty, it is a book that should be read by all people seeking to know God and the discovery of His eternal heart toward them; one that loves beyond measure and because of that longs for constant relationship with the one He created. Mr. Cooke has written many wonderful books that I highly recommend and his ability to take the esoteric idea of God and bring the reader into understanding on a logical basis through scripture is without equal; however, this book is profoundly beyond all of his other works so far. It's as if he brings you into a warm, softly lit room where peace abounds and then you realize that you are in the presence of God the Father and you know that you will never be that same. In the end you realize that it's all about relationship and prophecy flows from that and this book makes you want to dive headfirst into expanding that relationship. I am a life that has been touched, and happily, am undone for life as I once knew it. I have no other book that has as many notes and underlining in it as this one. Buy the book, read it, let yourself be changed because of it, then thank Mr. Cooke that he sometimes says the hard things that we need to understand for growth but at the same time brings the offering of the Father's heart that is without end in its broad love and delight for His children.

Epic - One of the best books I've read

This book wasn't easy for me to get through because it was flooded with revelation. I didn't just read this book, I lived it. I've been in a place of waiting for breakthrough and total dependency on God for a while now. He's been bringing me through fire and refining my trust in Him. When a word is spoken, there is a process where the Lord matures us to a place of being able to receive and walk that word out.

Graham Cooke has amazing insight on the pottering process the Holy Spirit uses to transform us into our true identity in Christ. What is revealed in this book is put into practice, spiritual growth will accelerate. I highly recommend this book to anyone hungry for a deeper intimacy with the Lord.

This is the first book in this series I've read. I'm excited about the other ones.
