Sad follow up. Exactly what you would expect to happen occurs. I could not finish this. I wish I had stopped after the first book.

Wonderful epic fantasy with some surprising plot twists

I have to admit, after reading the first novel in this series, The Last Whisper of the Gods, I thought I knew where everything was going. I was wrong. The Curse in the Gift takes a few of the characters in expected directions but there are some real surprises. As much as I liked The Last Whisper of the Gods, this is a better read. It’s faster paced with more action and the story is more complex. The characters develop nicely. Magic is more evident. The cliffhangers from the first book are all tied up. A new villain is introduced. The stakes become higher. If there’s a nit-pick, it’s that Berardinelli’s prose is sometimes wordy and there are a few awkward sentences. Still, compared to a lot of books I read these days (many of which come out of major publishing houses), this is as good or better. Berardinelli’s style isn’t up there with Martin or Rowling or Donaldson but he’s better than Brooks and dozens of others.

The Curse in the Gift is obviously designed to lead directly into the third book but there’s a sense of closure in the way this one ends. It doesn’t cut off at an inappropriate point. The first book is a good read but, the deeper I got into this one, the more apparent it became that The Last Whisper of the Gods was setup. This is where the meat can be found and it’s a great meal. Can’t wait to see how it all ends.

Running out of body parts.

This is actually a pretty good book. The story is good as are most of the interactions but it does have some flaws. The biggest two IMHO are the near omnipotent and omniscient antagonist (not in absolute power) but in that the worlds magic rules don't apply to him. This is problematic because the physical "cost" of using magic, the physical destruction of the casters body is the only limiting factor. While everyone else pays the cost the antagonist seems immune. The second is the need to torture the antagonist of ridiculous levels. At this point he's lost a hand, arm and leg, while the antagonist is in perfect condition. Of course this is the normal story arc but it felt done to extreme in this book. It made me want fast forward and skip to when the antagonist torture ends and the evenly matched contest begins

Loren Cunningham has been teaching on the subject of women in ministry for over thirty years. Youth With A Mission -- the interdenominational international mission he founded with his wife, Darlene -- has led in releasing people to obey God's call: young people, laypersons, short-term workers, non-Western missionaries, and women. Having ministered in every nation of the world, Loren knows firsthand how much hinges on the question Why Not Women?

David Joel Hamilton is a veteran missionary and scholar who wrote his master's thesis on the difficult Bible passages related to the ministry of women, an extensive work in which he cites some four hundred books and articles.

Janice Rogers lives with her husband, Jim, in Lindale, Texas, where they are pioneering a communications training center, Youth With A Mission Woodcrest. They have three grown sons who all are working with YWAM. Janice is also the sister of Loren Cunningham, with whom she has written three other books.

Ready to confront your bias?

This book opened my eyes to the difference between the beliefs we hold from our upbringing and culture, and the beliefs actually based on the Word of God. This book is very factual, exhaustively researched, and infinitely practical. In "Why Not Women", Loren Cunningham explains the history behind the oppression of women in Greek and Roman societies which led to centuries of discrimination in our western society, and even infiltrated the Church. He shows how Jesus and the early church were truly revolutionary in their equal treatment of women. David Hamilton digs into the controversial passages in God's Word to show how our preconceived biases have tainted our interpretation of these verses. He clearly breaks down the original language of the text in order to show what the writers were truly saying. If you are willing to let God's Word, not your opinions, determine what is truth, this book will open your eyes to God's heart for women, and the giftings and callings he has given them.

To those reviewers who are obviously threatened by the subject matter and seem content to merely prooftext scriptures to back up their bias, I have this recommendation: try actually READING this book before you review it. The authors dig into the original language and context of every scripture you misquote. A little research might do you some good.

A must read!

I have read more than a few books on this topic, and I must say that Why Not Women? provides one of the most well-rounded treatment of the subject. It covers not only the academic side by going through the biblical basis for women as full participants in life and ministry, but also shows how God has used women to minister. Historical background is also covered, but is not dry. It does not use an argumentative tone. While there are other good books on this topic, this one definitely seemed more "full of the Spirit" (for lack of a better phrase). It seems -- at least to me -- to proceed directly from the heart of God, rather than from a human agenda. If you read no other book on this subject, this is the one you should choose!

A must read for all Christians (men and women alike)

Quite simply, much of our history has been spent in telling women that they aren't as good as men. In times past, this belief has manifested itself in various ways such as requiring two women's testimony in court to refute a single man's testimony. By treating them as property instead of people. By allowing them to be put to death if they couldn't demonstrate bleeding on their wedding night (true -- see Deuteronomy).

And spiritually, it's been equally silly. Women aren't allowed to teach in the same room where there's a man. Women aren't allowed to pray if a man is present. Women can't lead, teach, preach or even speak in church. Many denominations (and religions) have taught that woman's role is to be at the capricious whims of their husbands without regarding whether the husband is actually on track with God's will.

As a result of this teaching, the body of Christ has operated for nearly 2,000 years with one arm tied behind its back. Women have been relegated to a role of ineffeciveness.

The Apostle Paul was a controversial figure in that he saw women as what they are: glorious, valuable, strong individuals who have HUGE gifts, talents and strengths for God's work. However, the religious establishment has taken his writings, pulled them out of historical context and claimed them to mean something they do not.

"Why Not Women?" is a refreshing look at the spiritual power of women and what Paul REALLY meant in those controversial -- and often misinterpreted -- verses. It's definitely worth your time, attention and money.

The long history of interpretation of the three Johannine letters has been largely characterized, at least since Irenaeus in the late second century, by the assumption that the Elder was addressing the Gnostic heresy. In recent years, particularly with the work of Raymond Brown, attention has been focused on the internal schism within the Johannine (or Beloved Disciple’s) community, thus taking the first epistle as a corrective to secessionists’ misguided attempts to read the Gospel of John in an “advanced,” spiritualizing manner.

Birger Olsson returns to a less common perspective, one that views the crisis facing the Elder as a wholly “intra-Jewish” problem. The Johannine community comprised Jewish believers who regarded Jesus as the long-promised Messiah of Israel, but at some point in the community’s life, under the leadership of one Diotrephes, some members of the community chose to reject this conviction and to entice other members to do likewise. Olsson anchors his thoroughgoing interpretation of the three letters in this conflict among Jewish Christians over the nature of the Messiah and the renewal of Israel’s ancient covenant. Among other things, this implies that the letters were written in reverse order of their numbering.

Dusty Richards has done it again. The story is a good one with action, love and of lawmen doing everything they can to solve the hanging of three young cowboys whose only problem was one being in love with a big rancher that didn't like it. Book was a good relaxing read. Ready for next book

Members of a pseudonymous Nicaraguan family here talk about their lives, beginning with accounts of the late Somoza years through the triumph of the 1979 revolution, and ending in 1987. The family consists of elderly Dona Maria Lopez, essentially apolitical but sympathetic to her children's political passions; her daughter Leticia, a Sandinista collaborator and the most articulate, least ingenuous subject; and Leticia's half-sister and half-brother, Marta and Omar, active in the revolution, now employed in Sandinista agencies. Amid occasional squabbling and political grandstanding, a compelling human panorama emerges, and one of tragic dimensions, as family members come to realize the fragility of the revolutionary culture that matters so deeply to them. Hart, a language instructor at Oregon State University who spent 1983 to 1987 meeting with her subjects, makes no claim to objectivity, yet her portrayal conveys great force and her subjects' eloquence.

An Interesting and Enlightening Experience

Ms. Hart's book is an interesting and enlightening account of the daily struggles of a Nicaraguan family. Their personal struggles and the horrible political situation strengthened their devotion to each other and their country.
A strong faith in God and family committment helped each member survive and thrive inspite of adversity.
The reader gains understanding of the political and social conditions in Nicaragua. Each family member shares their feelings and struggle.

Xeroxed paperback

I ordered this book presuming it was the harcover edition. It wasn't. In fact, not only was it paperback, but the pages were PHOTOCOPIED from the original. ALl of the photos and graphics look terrible. It is missing pages here and there, in the body, appendices, and index.

The book itself is a great book. Architectural Acoustics for dummies essentially. Just don't pay $80+ for a cheap photocopy.

Great Reference Book

This is my go-to reference book for room acoustics of large rooms*. Noise control, vibration and audio are lightly covered, but the focus is on room acoustics design of theaters, auditoria and concert halls.

I have the photo-copy edition (which is the only edition available for quite some time). The photographs in the book are not very good, but all of the other figures and text are perfectly clear. I haven't found any missing pages in mine either. It would be nice to have a hard cover with color photos (or at least high quality b/w photos) but the information is what makes this book valuable.

*Of course Egan's is great too, but I find Egan's to be a better self-teaching book for those just getting into acoustics, and this to be a better application book. If you are trying to choose, I recommend getting both.

Best for architects

I used this book for several years in my course of Architectural Acoustics and Noise Control for Architecture students. The book covers the basics of sound to applications of acoustics of real life, like speech auditoriums, theaters and symphonic rooms. The book covers also noise and vibration control and some topics of audio in a very simple way. Maybe some "engineering" or "math" oriented people will feel the book too simple, but the information is very valuable for the architecture student or practicing architect. By the way Egan's book in also highly recommended.

Biased and Poorly written

This book has many chapters (chapter 9 is the worst) that are very difficult to understand. I also counted a lot of typos in this book. It is very common to see a word misspelled or no spacing between two words. Many of the chapters are biased and present the opinion of the author as fact.

This text book was terrible. It was poorly written, and it takes an author's opinion and presents it as fact. Because there are multiple authors and it presents opinion as fact, these "facts" change from chapter to chapter. Not only does it present the multiple author's opinions as fact, it is heavily biased. I recall one chapter actually discussing the sexual desire that George W. Bush has for oil. I learned nothing from this book, and nothing from the class.

Edit: I forgot to mention, this book also references previous editions of the same book in order to have a source for a controversial "fact". Also, near the beginning it says everyone who has religious beliefs are unreasonable and their opinions should not be considered. I believe this is morally wrong, everyone's voice is important. This is an older book which often made world ending predictions due to American greed and materialism. Many of the dates talked about have come and gone without these events happening, such as worldwide famine, worldwide water shortages, and global wars due to overpopulation. I believe the only reason my instructor still uses this book because it is hard to find another that pushes her agenda as much as this one.

Deserves a Zero!

This has got to be the most useless piece of garbage to ever be classified as a text book. It is a collection of articles written by self-righteous elitists who seem to have a mission to indoctrinate the youth of this country. It is completely opinion-based and uses such reliable sources as Wikipedia (or their own previous works). I was forced to read this pitiful rag so I would pass the class I was taking. It was so bad, I had to find times to read it when I could be angry for several hours afterward - I am not joking. The bias is so bad, you would think you're reading something right from the Center for American Progress. I jokingly referred to it as the NPR Handbook.
It starts off right from the very first page. They insult an entire section of American society by stating that "it is no longer possible for a reasonable person to deny" Darwin's theory of evolution. While most people would agree with this statement, including me, who are they to say that people with religious beliefs different from their opinion are unreasonable? Are religious people insane? Are they somehow less intelligent than the authors?
The book relentlessly harps on the impending doom of global warming. Again, the bias is astounding. There is hardly a whisper that global warming may indeed be a natural phenomenon. After all, man is evil. And Americans, are even more so. Thus the quote, "Man strides over the earth and deserts follow in his footsteps." When's the last time you saw a quote like that in a text book?
In a seemingly benign article about the Challenger disaster, the author can't even reconcile his definition of a whistle blower with the subject of the article. He states that the Morton Thiokol engineer was a whistle blower, when he was simply a member of the team who never went outside the chain of command. He merely presented an unpopular opinion to his superiors.
In an article about war and defense contractors, any sense of fairness or impartiality is lost. From the title to the last paragraph, it is nothing but a trouncing of the defense contractors and the government officials who supply our armed forces. Using derogatory terms that they stole from another author, they describe these people as "Monopoly Makers, Dominant Clients and Dominant Regulators". This type of sarcasm and bias has absolutely no place in a text book.
But, they do manage to continue a tradition - they save the best for last. In the introduction to the last section, they lay out a world socialist agenda that puts us on the path toward the perfect utopia. We're going to become a self-policing peaceful society. We'll live under local control, but ultimately, we'll relinquish our national sovereignty to the new world government. We'll get money taken out of our paycheck to buy local companies and we'll like it because we'll be a new society in harmony with the ecosystem. Remember intellectual property rights? They'll be a thing of the past. We're all going to share our ideas with the world right away. Oh, and every time you come up with an idea, you must suggest it only after you do a full societal impact study to be sure you don't harm the society or the wooly wiggle worms. First and foremost, we must all recognize ourselves a de facto members of a single society. I'm sure the authors will be part of the ruling class in this new society, just to make sure we all stay in line.
I used to think that the conservatives who spoke about the indoctrination occurring on college campuses were blowing things way out of proportion. Now, I can say I've seen it first-hand. An exchange of ideas is mandatory in a classroom. I did my best to offer differing opinions in my class, but imagine how many people came away from this book believing every word like robotic drones.
If the authors want to write papers expressing their opinions, that's fine. But, to take that collection of papers and cram it between two pieces of cardboard and call it a text book is reprehensible. They should hang their heads in shame.
