Rare book from a master teacher

In this first decade of the 21st Century, we live in an age of instant gratification. It is no longer an arduous process to acquire the knowledge that for centuries was passed down from guru to disciple under the strictest conditions of qualification and testing on both sides. Today, spiritual seekers everywhere are confounded by so many options that it is difficult to focus on a single path and easy to avoid making a commitment. For many, going to see the latest" enlightened teacher" has become nothing more than a sophisticated form of entertainment. Some seekers even come to question the fundamental principles of the spiritual path, so that it is common nowadays to hear questions such as "Do I really need a guru?" "Do I need to make any effort?" or "Why should practice be necessary when I am already the Self?"

The book by Sri Siddharameshwar Maharaj, called "Master Key to Self Realization," which has recently been published for the first time outside of India, is a world away from all of this confusion. It is that rarity of rarities, a book that actually delivers what is promised by its title. It is in actual fact the master key to Self realization. However, you must understand that what you are holding in your hands when you pick up this book is a KEY. From one point of view it is all that you need, but, from another point of view, it is only a means. You yourself must take the key and open the door of the house, enter it, and take possesion of it.

Sri Siddharameshwar Maharaj wrote this book in the complete absence of doubt that came from his own realization. In addition to this, his statements are supported by an absolute confidence in the long tradition of realized Masters to which he belonged. He never had any need to doubt the validity of that tradition or to question its fundamental assumptions. He built on the foundation of understanding that had been passed onto him by his Master, Sri Bhausaheb Maharaj, making new discoveries of his own, but never swerving from the path of devotion to his guru.

The Master Key is not merely a book of knowledge. It is a practical book that contains the method for going beyond both knowledge and ignorance. The method taught in this book is meditation on, and enquiry into, the four bodies of the human being: gross, subtle, causal, and great-causal. It is in this sense a textbook of "Laya Yoga," "laya" meaning the merging of the illusory individual self into the all-pervasive universal Self.

Sri Siddharameshwar Maharaj began his spiritual search by practicing meditation, but later came to the conclusion that the way of understanding and Self-enquiry (jnana yoga) was a quicker way. However, the practice of meditation remains an important part of his teaching, because meditation is necessary to quieten the restless waters of the mind, which is an essential stage on the journey of Self discovery. Beyond that level of contemplation through meditation (to use his own words), where all remedies recommended by the scriptures are only hindrances, you will see for yourself how you reach the highest point.

I highly recommend this book to all seekers who wish to gain a true understanding of themselves, rather than a superficial understanding through concepts.

Good reference manual

I usually try to have a factory repair manual for cars I have had, but when your choices are limited with an older car then this manual works pretty good. The torque values and specs alone are worth the cost. My one complaint is the pictures are very poor resolution and hard to see clearly.

Saved us Big Bucks

My wife and I recently purchased a classic Mercedes 450SL. With a little research thanks to this book, we were able to make a smart buy. This book pointed out common problems we were unaware of, saving us from buying a money pit of a car. Also, this book was written for the normal person. It is easy to understand. Step by step it shows you how to make repairs - many of them the average person can do - again saving you the expense of a mechanic.

Poor photos Good info

Good but pages are full of low res photos. In this day and age it is not hard to have great photos. If I knew the photos were going to be this poor I may have not purchased. There are many online forums and resources available with the same good info but better photos.

About the Author
GABRIEL BURSTEIN, PhD, was a macro proprietary trader with Goldman Sachs. He currently heads Specialized Equity Sales & Trading at Daiwa Europe Ltd., London, a group he set up to sell European equity products to hedge funds based on long/short macro and relative-value ideas. He is a frequent speaker on new long/short macro strategies and the EMU at worldwide alternative investment and hedge fund conferences. Dr. Burstein received his PhD in mathematics from Imperial College of the University of London. He has had several papers published in mathematical control theory and in mathematical modeling in neurology, neuroendocrinology, and HIV immunology.

Not advanced - not simple

I cannot be overly critical of this book merely due to my own preconceived notions of what it might be. I was expecting some sort of more hands-on version of Soros' "Alchemy". What I got was nothing of the kind. The trade examples are very simplistic and the book poorly constructed, laid out, and written. The entire work could be 2-3 chapters in normal prose and outline. The strategies discussed were somewhat advanced strategies that were described in an extremely simplistic manner. Somewhat akin to Sesame Street giving instructions on how to manage an options book. I was sorely disappointed as I know the author is capable of delivering a much more intriguing work.

Titles might be misleading by Tevfik Aksoy

The book is based on ex post iteration of events and investment strategies, which lacks the necessary foundation of macroeconomic introduction. It requires extensive knowledge of macroeconomics and finance in order to grasp (or digest) what the ideas behind strategies are. Clearly not for a beginner but I would not recommend it for an experienced fund manager at all. I found most of the examples and strategies highly simple.

Not really that good.......

When I first saw this book and ordered it i was very excited to learn more about the intricies of macro trading. After reading about 1/2 of the book I could tell I just wasted $40. I found that the authors comparison of two different variables on 1 graph with 2 Y axis was statistically wrong. You cannot compare two different variables on absolute movement at all, espically when you are using two different scales on the same graph. Using this method of comparison sun-spots and the S&P500 have correlated. The correct way to do this is by comparing percentage movement of the two different variables. By doing this with my previos example there is no real correlation, jsut as one would think. I would assume that the same would occur for 1/2 of this books graphs.

All in all, buy, Market-Neutral Investing : Long/Short Hedge Fund Strategies by Joseph G. Nicholas, You'll apperciate it alot more and it isn't flawed like the book on this page!

About the Author
Robert S. Feldman is Professor of Psychology and Associate Dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. A recipient of the College Distinguished Teacher Award, he teaches psychology classes ranging in size from 15 to nearly 500 students. During the course of more than two decades as a college instructor, he has taught both undergraduate and graduate courses at Mount Holyoke College, Wesleyan University, Virginia Commonwealth University, in addition to the University of Massachusetts.

Professor Feldman, who initiated the Minority Mentoring Program at the University of Massachusetts, also has served as a Hewlett Teaching Fellow and Senior Online Teaching Fellow. He initiated distance learning courses in psychology at the University of Massachusetts

A Fellow of both the American Psychological Association and the Association for Psychological Science, Professor Feldman received a B.A. with High Honors from Wesleyan University and an M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is also author of Child Development, Understanding Psychology, and P.O.W.E.R. Learning: Strategies for Success in College and Life. His books have been translated into a number of languages, including Spanish, French, Portuguese, Dutch, Chinese, and Japanese. His research interests include honesty and deception in everyday life and the use of nonverbal behavior in impression management, and his research has been supported by grants from the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Institute on Disabilities and Rehabilitation Research.

Professor Feldman loves music, is an enthusiastic pianist, and enjoys cooking and traveling. He has three children, and he and his wife, a psychologist, live in Amherst, Massachusetts, in a home overlooking the Holyoke mountain range.
